Re: Endorsements to your certificate of competency
Or / and a 100 nautical miles think was the original thinking. Also the original idea of the ships motor boat was to tow the other boats clear of the parent vessel. With the advent of the modern radio alarm systems and Epirbs it used to be taught to stay where you were in a group and wait for the knights in shining armour to find you. What they teach today only those who have done the courses recently will know. Think the standing lug and jib would be more useful for collecting rain water , or shelter from the weather than getting anywhere . Cheers JS

Re: Endorsements to your certificate of competency
That info regarding time and distance was given to me by the skipper of a Royal Caribbean cruise ship some years ago.
But with constant upgrades in the use of those boats and the accociated boat drill who knows how it will work now.
Just hope the bloody ship does not sink.

Re: Endorsements to your certificate of competency
I always looked on the ship as long as it was floating to be the safest place to be. All this romantic drivel about the master being the last to leave the ship. I put down to a few different reasons , that is one of them , the other is he is going to have to answer a lot of questions , and once he is off the vessel it then becomes free for anyone to put a towline on with a possible huge reward salvage wise. There was only one time in my time at sea that I came close to putting out a mayday for myself , but would have stayed on the vessel as long as she was afloat. The engineers got her going again just in time.on finally making Aberdeen was found all the bottom ends were gone . We just all stepped over the rail onto another family member of the mutilated creature and sailed back out to the location . JS

I am well known for being a tosser John, and although the command "Toss oars ! is the one given in training establishments to prepare for a gruelling rowing workout in which it is hoped one doesn't 'catch a crab' ,-or two- I couldn't help thinking that the sadistic sarcastic sardonic instructor we had made the command sound as if he was really saying "Toss-ers! ,and not "Toss Oars!",but that I assumed might just have been his Hull accent anyway!,'cause that's how they really do talk.
Boat hooks-yes,two in a lifeboat and must never be lashed down for obvious reasons- must be readily available for fending off or pushing off,or spearing a tasty looking fish, unlike all the other gear, which we don't want to lose in case of a capsize,do we,and which we duly lash to the boat....Swimmer.gif

Re: Endorsements to your certificate of competency
Well the bosun shouted 'oars and the crew said where?
As to catching crabs, well no good standing on the seat the crabs in here can jump six feet.
