I see that the media are reporting the incident but showing a photo of a Swedish ship which caught fire a week ago with firefighting tugs in attendance.

But the public will not know the difference.

Scot carrier is a 90 metre long open bulk carrier owned by Scotline who are based in Inverness, I think. Quite a big outfit with some decent looking new builds. Was often in the locks in Antwerp with one of them and if I am correct they use British crews.
According to some reports both ships were travelling in the same direction in the traffic lane so don't think the collision was due to a crossing situation but an overtaking gone wrong.

The Karin Hoej is a split hull hopper barge with duel deck mounted 'outboard' drives. she was only 50 mtr, half the size of the Scot Carrier. Weather reported to be foggy and there seems to be some other 'extenuating circumstances' being banded about. Is it not the case that a split hull hopper barge always has water sloshing about in the hold even when not carrying dredged material?

i don't think that is the case.Surely the hulls should be closed and residual liquid pumped out after discharge of the sand, slurry etc?

Now,my take on this design may be simplistic and cynical;.... Water is the great power at sea.(Fire is the other one,but we mean water here). Anything, which by it's design,or usually in an accident, that compromises the integrity of a vessel's hull ,then that vessel is usually doomed,or in great trouble, whether it is one of these barges,or a Ro-Ro vessel with hull doors,or a breached hull as in Titanic....it is doomed when water enters. Anyone agree or disagree?
We seafarers are taught from day one not to let water anywhere inside your vessel ,whether it's in your holds,or anywhere on deck in rough seas if you can help it,make sure you are battened down, watertight, all freeing ports and scuppers clear, valves shut etc, etc. The sea is our love, but we don't want to drown in it !

Latest is that two crew members of the scot carrier, a Brit (apparently on watch at the time) sand a Croatian, have been arrested and charged not only with manslaughter but also being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision by the Swedish authority.
