Ship marna
Whilst editing the G.A. PLANS section.
I noticed the above ship has the Carpenters cabin in an unusual place.
Its sited between the after accom and the bridge accom in one of the deck housings.
Can anyone remember an unusual place for cabins on any of their ships.
The MARNA was built by HALL RUSSELL of Aberdeen.

Re: Ship marna
In earlier years as regards crew accomodation very little thought was put into accomodation , and as many sailed on old Tonnage many would be aware of the difference between then and now. Prior to 1936 very little interest was shown by the owners , but in subsequent reforms the minimum figures of 15 square feet and 120 cu. ft. Per man were embodied in the rules issued in 1937. When the old fashioned forecastle and lower forecastle were condemned , seamen and firemen were berthed in the poop. For the firemen this was advantageous , in that they could use the shaft tunnel at change of watch, without going on deck. There are quite a lot of reports about accomodation on file , but some they are mostly just talk. The shipowner to retain crew had to change his ideas , which most did at a much later date , the first part of this post is from official history , the last part my
comments . JS
On an old empire type vessel which had no housings on the boat deck , the accomodation block abaft no.3 hatch
On the starboard side was the catering staff and on the port side was the engineers .The 4 apps were in the catering staffs side at the end of the alleyway up against No. 3 hatch , next was the 2 cook/ baker the 2 cabin boys , the 2 assistant stewards , then 2 steward ,then ch. cook , then the I bathroom and toilet. On the port side opposite the apprentices , was Ch.eng. Then all the way down to 6 th. Engineer. Down aft was where they kept Cappy locked up on the steering gear deck with 4 to a cabin.? Above on the main deck was 2 single berth cabins port side carpenter, starboard side Bosun. 0utside the bosuns cabin was a hand pump which Cappy used to be chained to to pump the fresh water ration up for all the crowd . Can’t make out on your plan the carpenters cabin but on similar type layouts this would have been the apprentices accomodation. Think the Cragmoor which again Cappy was on will know. Bridge housing forward of No. 3 hatch was master , 3 mates ,R/O. Chief Stwd. Saloon , pantry . At the end of the accomodation abaft no.3 hatch on the weather deck was the galley. Cheers JS
