Oceans are large, deep, open expanses of water, while seas are shallower and partly encircled by land. Both Oceans and seas are comprised of Salt Water, Taken together , the 5 Oceans ( Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern and Arctic ) contain 97% of all the water on the Earth and cover about 71% of its surface.
Pacific..... Is by far the largest , being twice the size of the Atlantic. It covers about a third of the Earths surface, and contains more than half the water on the Planet.
Atlantic... The second largest Ocean
Indian.... Comprises about fifth of the total area covered by seawater. It is the third largest Ocean.
Southern. Includes all water lying South of Latitude 55 degrees South, and is the fourth largest Ocean. In winter
more than half the surface is covered by ice.
Artic.........The smallest and shallowest Ocean ,containing just 1 % of the Earths salt water. A thick sheet of ice
covers it for most of the year.

The warmest sea is the Persian Gulf
The saltiest sea is the Red Sea.
The following are seas Coral Sea, China Sea, Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk,
Sea of Japan, Andaman Sea.
Landlocked bodies of water such as the Dead and Caspian seas are properly classified as Lakes.

JS #1 Well yes there are many more John,incl.Red Sea and various seas within seas like those in the Med;Aegean,Adriatic,Tyrrhenian,Ionian.
All the time I was musing,as one does,I thought about the Queen hit " Seven Seas of Rhye"-no,I always spelt it Rye-but then thought what a daft title,Rye is just a little fishing port in East Sussex on the south coast and barely has enough water to float a rowing boat,never mind having Seven Seas !

All is revealed now.. "This song is based upon the singer's quest to conquer the seven seas of Rhye, with Rhye being a fictional world that Freddy Mercury, Queen’s lead singer and the track’s writer/performer, conjured up during his exotic childhood along with his sister. The world of Rhye is a recurring setting in a number of Queen’s song, not just this one".

I thought as much...not! I'm very tempted to use a Michael Caine expression here ,but I really think even he couldn't be ar**d.
And I won't even write down the lyrics-they are quite incomprehensible to even those of us who took part in the Summer of Love and it's few sequel years,up to 1970 in my case,then I went to sea,which nicely brings us back to - The Sea!

Though no more than a very big lake the Dead Sea is the saltiest amount of water on the planet.
You can float there with impunity knowing that unless someone pulls you under you will not drown.

#5 Vic, like Scotland , Ireland certainly get more than our fair share, the Welsh as well and the Lake district is not called the Lake district for no reason.
We in Ireland get the sweet rain and that is why Irish Whiskey is better than that Scotch Whisky they make just across the sea of Moyle

I never knew that it was only in the 19th century that the Irish started to spell Whiskey adding the E. Apparently it was to distinguish the brands from one another.
