New Royal Yacht
According to Sky News online, the Government is set to announce the building of a new Royal Yacht.
The new yacht is estimated to cost £200m and Cammel Lairds are favorites to build her.
Good news.

Re: New Royal Yacht
My jury's out on this one, I think the money would be better spent on a patrol boat, you could also rename a destroyer 'Prince Phillip' both having a more practical use. I think the days of hosting trade shows on Royal Yachts may be over in this modern world, as we have Embassies world wide performing this function.

Re: New Royal Yacht
The story goes that the Britannia was built as a dual purpose vessel as a Royal yacht and also able to convert at short notice to a hospital ship. During the Falklands war there were various voices raised why she wasn’t used in her secondary role. There were various answers why she wasn’t and these came mostly from political corners. We were lead to believe that fuel wise there was some obscure reason why she wasn’t compatible, another that her loss would be seen as bad for the patriotic feelings of the country , but this was worded differently at the time, another one was that she would be a prime target for the Argy airforce, if she was a hospital ship and was a target then that puts all modern warfare as to treaty’s etc. up as a waste of time and meaning nothing. I think a Royal yacht is a luxury and go along with it , if the country can afford and a useable and feasible argument can be put forward as to her use in the case of having to use otherwise , with no excuses of not having to do so. Re: New Royal Yacht
The cost of building a new yacht is to much as there are always over runs on things like this, there will still be very high running costs on completion. As all ready mentioned name a war ship of the future after the Prince it shows respect and costs nothing extra. This country is not yet out of the corona virus threat with hundreds of billions of pounds to pay back and does not need wasteful vanity projects like this

Re: New Royal Yacht
The Royal Yacht was a daily sight to me and others when lying in Portsmouth. The Gold Gilt paint alone which I saw painted time and time again must have cost a fortune on its own. It was a bit like the Forth Bridge as was continuously being painted and maintained. Good for British morale to look at , and good for British morale to see abroad. But the feasability of its use will have to be a good argument to have as a necessity. So also tend to think has every possibility of being a pink elephant folly if go ahead with. Still waiting to see peoples other arguments for having. Think it was about 1948 during the Festival of Britain that some old aircraft carrier was done up and paid the Tyne a visit, this was opened to the public and aroused more public pride than any RY would do today. It was different times and a different generation. Peoples lack of pride in their own achievements is hard to find today. JS

Re: New Royal Yacht
John I would applaud most things that give the nation a bit of pride back. There are far to many people in this country and around the world who find far to many faults with the U.K. They ignore the achievements and sacrifices that have been made over the years. As you have mentioned the last Royal Yacht looked fantastic BUT was never used when called upon for its role as a hospital ship. I would not trust any present or future politician who espoused a similar proposition to keep their word as to the use of such a ship. So I am against the idea of building another Royal Yacht. Having just written the above it is probably putting the cart before the horse as there has been no announcement on the subject to date.

Re: New Royal Yacht
#6. If we lived in a perfect world and I had my way John , all these so called British subjects who take shelter under a British passport and citizenship , and who espouse the country to the detriment of everything British , should have their citizenship annulled , their passport cancelled and stamped unsuitable , and told to find free board and lodgings elsewhere. And until a proper politician stands up and performs his job correctly you are always going to get the moaners groaners agitators and the flotsam and jetsam of a sick society free to upset everyone else. In wartime they were the fifth column and are still alive and carrying on with their aim in life , we call it destruction of what was once a proud nation . The gays of today put them to shame, at least they put up their pretty marked flags to distinguish their homes where they live, the agitators hide themselves behind others in the hope of not being detected and to me are mealy mouthed in a lot of cases traitors and no use to any country. Re: New Royal Yacht
When on the Wave Baron we escorted the Gothic as far as Colombo when the Queen and Prince Philip went on tour to NZ, why have a Royal Yacht if they didn't use it, surprising that they used the Gothic, what with the name she had.
