Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
For those looking for records of past family and what medals they are entitled to, for anyone not knowing that when OBEs and MBEs turn up , that apart from OBE standing for Over Bloody Eighty , also stands for those in the trade as Others Bloody Efforts, and MBE for My Bloody Efforts. These decorations were given to Merchant seamen and members of the fire Service also the Police.. In 1957 medals awarded for acts of gallantry , as opposed to meritorious Service , have been distinguished by the addition of an emblem composed of two silver oak leaves.

Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
Cargo ship Bateau, 4.687grt, (US Maritime Commission) loaded with a general cargo including war material in America for Murmansk had sailed from Loch Ewe and joined up with the 21 ship Convoy PQ-13, which departed Reykjavik on the 20th March 1942. Hampered by severe Arctic gales the convoy was thrown in to disarray and many ships became stragglers. By the 27th March the weather had subsided enough for the Germans to attack the now vulnerable ships and on the 28th March the merchantmen came under attack by German U-boats and aircraft sinking two ships. The following day three German destroyers were also sent to look for the remnants of the convoy and the Destroyer Z-26 comes across the Bateau and was sunk in the Barents Sea in position 72’ 30N 27’ 00E, with the loss of thirty-nine crewmembers. The seven survivors had been trying to release an iced up lifeboat and were dragged down with the ship. Coming to the surface they managed to swim to the upturned lifeboat and righted it, only to be rammed by the destroyer and found themselves back in the icy water. Z-26 then proceeded to pick up six men, the other being drowned. Two days later the destroyer was damaged by HMS Edinburgh and the survivors were transferred to another German destroyer before being landed at Kirkenes, Norway where they were eventually transported to Milag Nord for the duration of the war.

Medal Records. Shows he was issued the 1939-1945 Star as well
A cross (×) drawn through a symbol indicates the issue of that medal; a circle (O) drawn through a symbol indicates that only the ribbon for that medal has been issued. If a cross and a circle have been used then both a medal and a ribbon have been issued. An R sometimes appears and signifies that an application for that medal was reviewed and refused. For those trying to discover whether a medal was issued, or was an unclaimed entitlement, then the MCA should be contacted, before undertaking lengthy searches at TNA, as they have the most up-to-date records.

Re: Help wanted in research of a WWII casualty
Well done Keith, I'm deeply indebted to all of you for your collective efforts and the information it has garnered for Sylvia and her sisters, and their children. I have copied all the information, including what was on the links you each added and I am sending it over to her.

My post #7 shows the Medal Card but wonder then why the 39/45 Star is not showing ??
I had also told Rodney about the X on the Medal Card
Thanks for extra info.
