Flying tab nab
There are some I am sure who when in Port Melbourne all those years ago made a visit to the Seamans Mission in the flinders Street Extension.
A large grey colored building with a large dome at one end.
A Chapel much of which is in the form of the stern of a 16th century sailing ship.
Services are still held there on a Sunday morning.
Over the years it has had a few updates including the addition of a bar and often the domed area is used to hold art work shows.
It stands on land that many developers would kill for, a prime spot for development but as it is Heritage Listed it cannot be touched.
Today it was announced that a Maratime Museum will be established there, so far no details of what will be included but a worthy use for the building.

John,
Would that be the same one that I visited in 1967?

Re: Flying tab nab
I went there several times from 1955 on wards. on Dancing nights.
took a few of the very attractive Mission Girls, home from there, They were Nice Girls, well behaved. just a kiss at their station, nothing else.
The Chaplain was a BIG Fellow, with a big iron fist and could throw out, with ease any Seaman who stepped out of line.
He also had a bad stutter which made the Sunday Service last twice as long.

Most likely Duke, I visited for the first time in 1964 and apart from adding the bar there has been little change.
A few years ago there was a lady in charge of it and on Friday night there were dances for any one interested.
