Brian that’s what I call taking so called company loyalty too far , in fact it borders on Ass hxxx creeping for the company., saw a similar occurence as 2 Mate , where the new skipper would not close the Articles and pay off the crew after doing a Palm Line Charter down the West Coast.and returning to Rotterdam Nothing but trouble that trip including a collision in the Plate which have mentioned in different circumstances. 0n pay off in Liverpool some months later he logged over 10 crew members with double DRs, one of the reasons I don’t have too much faith in the fairness of the old system. I knocked back masters jobs a couple of times in two different company’s , let’s just say I didn’t want to be tied down to a shipowners personal morals. As when I did go master I looked after their interests , but the first duty of any master I saw as putting the welfare of his own crew first. Then safety of life second and the owners welfare third and still think that way. Those who pandered to the owners wishes knowing they were wrong had themselves to blame at the end of the day. They still went the same as everyone else at the decline of shipping in general. I took the attitude anyone was dispensable and you were only as good as your last job.cheers
PS that master was an ex company Bosun 60 years of age and his first trip as master , you would of thought he knew men better than he did. JS

Swansea locks was a great place for either late arrival's or late departures, by the time you had let go and got a rope to a tug many would have sobered up as the lock gates closed, giving them time to wake up to what they had signed on.

Des, What i remember of Swansea was there seemed to be to many woman and not enough men to go around, So we always obliged the lady's with a bit of male companionship. Good run ashore Terry.

Hi Interesting as you were on the Castledore fpr less then a day. I was going to ask who was the first mate. He may have been the master in 1999 when I was in the Mapledore on her last voyage on the DOSC coal run I was 3rd Mate Roger Jones Swansea.
