#10 On the average 10,000 ton tramp with 40 of a crew if your water consumption went above 8 ton a day you got worried , especially on long passages. A 6 week passage was nothing unusual and at 8 ton a day was 336 tons , probably about the full capacity of your tanks. Drinking water was always kept in a seperate tank and the tank had to be cleaned and coated at various times. however the purpose of a cargo ship is to make money , if ship was not going down to its marks. Was good news for all on board as could fill right up. The TPI on average for that size of vessel ( tons per inch immersion ) was about 40 tons , with a deadweight cargo like grain or any other bulk cargo water was less cargo and less money. So if you carried say 500 tons of water questions would be asked. Today and a good few years back the introduction of evaporators and distillers was a big bonus for the shipowner as one sailed with about 10 tons of water and a ship made more than enough for everyone to brush their teeth when they felt like it. Plus the shipowner was richer by thousands of pounds every cargo and everyone was a lot happier.. however with all these improvements to shipping in general did nothing to stop the decline of the British M.N. When planning for a passage not called passage planning in those days, the carriage of bunkers of 30 % extra was acceptable , but not for water, and had to use your head cross your fingers and hope you had no dripping taps , the engineers usually got the blame for any shortages as got accused many times of pilfering water into the E,R. Feed tanks for their own various purposes , whilst others strode around with halos on their heads. Cheers JS

#10. Again John , can’t remember the articles of agreement as per allowances for food and water, but wouldn’t be surprised that you were getting more than your wack . The allowances always kept others in the clear if had to fall back on. Forget the Water allowances but anyone who kept goldfish in a jam jar wouldn’t be too happy. JS
