joined the foreign legion
My Dad was on S S Manchester Port in early 50's. I understand he jumped ship in Algiers and joined the foreign legion.
There is a stamp instead of the normal very good on his certificate of discharge book.

I wonder if anybody could tell me anymore or help me acquire more information. thank you

Re: joined the foreign legion
Manchester Port would trade to Canada and the east coast of the States.
I was on the Manchester Merchant and we did all the eastern seaboard of Canada and States from Halifax down to Florida. the smaller ships did the Great Lakes,
If she went down to the Medi then it could have been on a charter with one of Furness Withy Lines trading areas.
Maybe TRADER could give more information as he did a few of the Manchester Liners I think.

Hi Brian,
Did a couple on the Manchester Merchant.
Not a bad ship, but lots of cold wet weather.
Didn't go south, just right across to Montreal.

Re: joined the foreign legion
Hi Robert, as Brian (Captain Kong) says I sailed with Manchester Liners for a few years, in fact I was on the Manchester Port in 1959 and did several trips to Montreal and East coast of USA. She was built in 1935 so it would be the same ship that your father sailed on. I doubt very much that she did any trips to Algiers. Have you got his discharge book?, could you have made a mistake. Manchester Liners did do trips to the Mediterranean in the winter when the Great Lakes were iced up and I was on two of them, the Manchester Fame and Manchester Faith but we never touched any where near Algiers. We were on the Israel run for Jaffa oranges but did call at Cyprus and Malta. Is it possible to send a screenshot of your fathers discharge book.?

Re: joined the foreign legion
If his Dad jumped ship he would not have his discharge book. wouldn't he need to apply for it? Still haven't got mine back, after fifty years.
