In a lot of ports, especially in the Medi, you moored stern to the quay, so quite a common practice, you came down really quickly when vessel in ballast!

Often when in drydock the shore gangway was placed after and if you look at pics of modern container feeder ships then their gangway is nearly always fitted right aft.

Hi Mike.
In Genoa, and a Norwegian port up in the Arctic Circle, where the ropes ended up like iron bars, had to run down the deck and let them lay there until they defrosted .

Can't remember which ship but once had to go ashore by means of a rope ladder over the stern. Severval fell in going ashore sober, no one fell in returning somewhat under the weather.
