###oui mon ami ...dos cervesas.....well john i couldnt believe the overtime ....we were soojying the same inboard alleyways twice at least between 7 islands and the UK...steaks at least once a week no captains inspections ..apart from him popping in the galley for a chat ..choice of hot meat at dinner......docking bottles galore....there somehow seemed less barriers between officers and crew in general.....and been back in the UK almost monthlyplus....saved towards my ist property in ore carriers and pat saving at home we soon had a good deposit.....looking back the ore carriers were a gift horse to seamen in general...accom first class ....air con......short runs ....happy days.regards cappy

Left over eggs ? any old Clan Line chef steward would be turning in his grave at the thought , one egg per man per day , including the one egg omelette and one egg scrambled egg

##when galley boy i would go down the stores to get 42 eggs for breakfast on the hains boat ....the chief steward would sometimes be in the pantry as i came up and count the bleedin eggs ....egg sarnies in yer dreams lol cappy

I left the sea in 1986 and Brown-Brothers were testing electronic control of stabilisers on MV Earl Granville , brilliant control , but in very heavy seas you fold them in to prevent them being damaged

Chris CPR's Britain,England and Canada had stabilisers at that time Cunards Saxonia,Carinthia and Sylvania didn't have stabilisers both sets of ships on the North Atlantic trade.I remember one trip on the Britain a really bad crossing we moved about a bit I cant' remember if we were late or how late we were getting to Montreal,at the same time the Carinthia was doing the same trip she got a right hammering and I believe that she had broken windows on the promenade deck and was well late arriving Montreal.So there you are one with and one without stabilisers.I used to look at the stabilisers from the boat deck to me they looked like 50 gallon drums end to end sticking out of the side of the ship.

Having never sailed on a ship with stabilisers, I saw a program recently on TV which was interesting servicing a ferry in dry dock, that was the first time I have seen stabilisers, really interesting program, kt
