I have been watching this programme on Quest TV over the past few weeks. Last night it was about the MSC Napoli, and the abandoning of the ship in a storm whilst transiting the Channel.
The investigative work in order to determine the fact causes is very interesting.
After weeks of investigating the investigators could find no evidence as to why the ship suffered a large crack in the hull jusypt in from of the E.R. Not hen they got hold of the hull construction drawings the discovered why the hull failed.
The hull was constructed with four large beams running from the is to heE.R.. at the engine bed plate the beams changed direction from running for to aft, an instead ran ports to starboard, causing a design weakness in the hull.
They also discovered that some of the containers were overloaded, how would they know? Its only recently containers have been weighed before they are loaded onboard.
