    Default Nautilus fund

Without raking over old ground I had promised my wife that I would retire before my 59th birthday a couple of years before when she was approaching the end of a terminal illness . I did this and arranged an annuity and some capital funding 3 months before the banks crashed . This left me with very little capital since then the unfortunate on set of tetraplegia as cost all together quite a lot of money . That's the background

I can't use my bath because my legs won't lift higher than about 12 inches off the ground so I needed a wet room or a shower tray with a very low entry I looked around and without taking on a huge deck it was going to cost me somewhere between 5 and £10,000

I applied to my local council for a disability grant and because I've got an income although no capital they said I would have to get a loan and pay £16,500 of up to £30,000 that they would grant that meant that the whole of the cost of a bathroom would be mine so I've gone back to what we did as a child and stand on a towel hang on to the sink and have what we used to call in those pre bathroom days in a cottage in Derbyshire a strip wash

I was talking to a health professional and she said as your ex Merchant Navy why don't you apply to the Merchant Navy welfare board well I did in January and they sent out a lady from the Nautilus Welfare Fund they also means test your income but unlike the council they take into account your expenditure as well where the council only look at income

10 months later after their at computer had been unfortunately hit with ransomware and they lost the notes because they quite rightly wouldn't pay the Ransom where they have come along and granted me the cost of the bathroom and I thought where better place can I say an open thank you for the Nautilus Welfare Fund then here

They raise the charity Grant by approaching several charities and getting some from here and some from there and I believe in my case there are four different charities involved now I've spoken to some ex colleagues who are certainly well past retiring and have differing amounts of capital and income and nobody seems to have ever heard of this

So I'm going to say a big open thank you for the Nautilus Welfare Fund I will be able to have a shower for the first time at home in 4 years

#3... Have recently been looking at a similar type of thing, but in this case is run by the RAAFA. so will have to get the brylcream out if and when a place becomes vacant. Have a friend already in and he reckons he’s better off. No rates to pay and all services done like grass cutting etc. Also handy full time care adjacent to. The choice of this particular one. Was the advantage of having a pub in the grounds, and if they have a happy hour that will seal it for me. The thing with military establishments they are not all run to make huge profits and their clientele are usually well behaved and disciplined. Maybe I may not fit that role so will have to wait and see. JWS

Here in Oz the feral gov recently began the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Meant to assist those under 65 with permanent disabilities.
Great concept, but as my GP informs me being rorted by those who know how to get around such schemes.
Though to be fair there are many who do benefit from it and rightly so.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

we have some clever claimants here for a variety of benefits , genuine people get a hard time from the department of work and pensions , looking for cheats but false claims are a small percentage
