Default Merchant Navy Day, Monday 3rd September

The annual campaign by charity Seafarers UK to encourage local councils large and small to fly a Red Ensign on a civic building or public flagpole has been well received this year, with nearly 800 locations listed on a 'Roll of Honour' at https://www.merchantnavyfund.org/merchant-navy-day/

I have been trying to find out if there is a service at the monument for merchant seamen in Edinburgh this Monday and what time is it on?

The last bit of fine tuning ensures a Merchant Navy week for Barry Docks.

    Butterfly Collector Barry

Barry’s first micropub on Holton Road serving cask ales and craft beers is supporting National Merchant Navy Day.

Anyone attending the Annual Merchant Navy Service being held at the Merchant Navy memorial, Civic Offices, Holton Road, Barry on Friday 31st August 2018 at 10.00 will find just up the road from the Merchant Navy monument the new bar adorned with “Red Dusters” the Red Ensign flag of the Merchant Service.

    Remember the Merchant Navy

Everyone is very welcome to support the Merchant Navy and Mercantile Marine past and present and toast the fallen of past conflicts under the flag they sailed under at the Butterfly Collector Barry.

This year Barry as a former Merchant Navy town, port / dock will further remember the former Mercantile Marine and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. In this WW1 Centenary year the local Merchant Navy Association branch will particularly remember those very many men who sailed from Barry, never to return, 100 years ago and in the years since.

Those attending the actual service and locals and visitors for a few more days are welcome to raise a glass to those that have “Crossed the Bar” and Toast to “Absent Friends” at the Butterfly Collector Barry.

In the Second World War, together with the other South Wales ports, Barry was to play a vital role and its proportion of fatalities per head of population would become the highest in Britain.
