Hi JWS and Fouro it was not a good watch after that thinking about what was happening and the continuing efforts to put the fire out. I must bee a bit of a jinx as I was on watch the night the Herald of free Enterprise turned over leaving port. Rgds Den

14... No comment thought I recognised the face at the ceremony on 6 July 2018. A further no comment on Ed Punchard and his self proclaimed feats. Although think a little bit more checking should be made before making any statements. Especially as others statements do not always agree . e.g. how about the video he stole and self confessed destroyed of him doing a sailors jig on landing at Dyce airport from helicopter. Good example from a grieving survivor. JS

#16...No need for concern Fouro. If I was going to throw a wobbler would have done it long before now. Got home late last night and still trying to put the right plugs in holes so this may not even get transmitted. Previous short messages were sent on grandkids IPads when they weren’t looking. The uk today does not bring back any home sickness signs and like the old song I still call Australia home. Aberdeen still causeda few pangs , but as purpose of visit was to attend the rememerbrance service which was quite disturbing to see great grandchildren among the others not even born at the time. Had to do it for my own peace of mind that’s all. Will send an email to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum to see if they want anymore mementos apart from the one battered. George Medal , which the curators could not define how they received , but thought the recipient had passed away, which made me sad as was a good shipmate. However am not 100 percent sure this is true so will continue my own line of enquiry via other sources. No upsets at all Fouro and thanks for your concern . Will see now whether this goes or not. #1 .... 165 oil rig workers and two practicing merchant seamen to be pedantic Fouro. Unknown how many ex merchant seamen amongst the victims. Cheers JWS.

I knew I had made a mistake in saying 167 "oil rig" men had lost their lives. So rather than request to have the post deleted, I decided to let it go. Two of the total 167 fatalities included two merchant seamen.
Brian Batchelor and Malcolm Storey were awarded the George Medal posthumously. Both men were crewmen serving aboard the stand-by vessel "Sandhaven". Along with Iain Letham they boarded their fast rescue craft and after picking up six survivors there was an explosion and the rescue craft was engulfed in flames. The six men they had picked up and the two crewmen perished as a result of this. Iain Letham was blown into the water by the blast and survived. Iain was also awarded a George Medal.
Unfortunately Iain Letham died of cancer last year.
