s.s.Genoa
I am asking on behalf of someone and I'm no good at this tracing lark
The 'Genoa' was lost in 1912 whist on passage from Blyth to the south coast with a cargo of coal. All hands perished, but my aqaintance cannot find anywhere a death certificate issued for Charles Waller aged approx 19, he was serving in the engineroom, can anyone help, please don't spend a lot of time on it as it is a matter of curiosity rather than a family necessity. I cannot get anymore information at this time as the enquirer is travelling

Re: s.s.Genoa
Ivan this is all I could find so far from FMP pretty poor in detail:
Deaths at sea, 1781-1968 Transcription
First name(s) C
Last name Waller
Gender Unknown
Birth year -
Death year 1912
Death date Mar 1912
Reported date 1912
Departure port -
Series BT 334
Box 0051
Record set Deaths at sea, 1781-1968
Ancestry have 1,193 Waller's listed for a time frame between 1860-1960, not in numerical order for 1893-1912 so if you don't mind will finish after St Stephan Day as I'm only at the 300 mark.

Re: s.s.Genoa
#2..Chris Your HERE brings back memories as St. Abbs Head to the River Tyne and the Farne Islands Mercator chart was often used for chartwork examinations together with the well known English Channel Charts. If I had a pound for every chart I had corrected of the St. Abbs head one when second mate, I would be a rich man today. However the one shown on your HERE is of latter years as the depths are in metres and not fathoms. Anywhere around the British Isles is strewn with hundreds of shipwrecks, which on the whole are well catalogued. JS

I really dont know Marion, RN records have always appeared to me to be far better than MN records. I know its an awful thing to say and think but from my limited experience of researching, ship owners of that time did not seem to attach much importance to their crews and families well being once the ship had sunk, and whether they had died or not. This attitude still showed during WW2 when crews of ships that were sunk had their wages stopped from the moment the ship sank. Absolutely appalling. I am afraid that type of behavior is a very sad blight on the history of the British Merchant Navy and one that the shipowners of that time should have been ashamed of but were blatantly not.

HERE I have a feeling that Death Certificates were not issued for people lost at sea at that time unless the body was recovered, stand to be corrected on this.
Chris.
I think you are correct on that Chris, especially in the era circa 1912, in which era seamen were regarded as a commodity rather than a breathing living thing and could easily be replaced, more thought would have been given to a broken cup and saucer than to the life lost of a seaman.
Please people do not spend a lot of time on this, and I sincerely thank you all for the efforts already made, it is appreciated

Re: s.s.Genoa
Hi Ivan,
See attached. Don't look for a D.C. the body was not recovered so at that time a D.C. would not be issued. His death was recorded in the Deaths at Sea Register.
Regards
Hugh
