From one of my unpublished books

The girl who had guided Flag told him she would sit and talk to him if he paid her drinks plus a dollar per half hour. She was unbelievably small and skinny, but he agreed. She looked more like a refugee waif than a bargirl to Flag. He supposed he felt sorry for her, and didn't pay her much attention at first. But gradually she claimed more and more of his attention. He began to realize that she was sharp as a tack, intelligent and witty. Though English was only one of her languages, she spoke it very well, including idiom. When she realized she had recaptured him from the other attractions, she started to imitate his Scottish brogue in her speech, and soon had him laughing. She rolled her Rs convincingly, coined a few puns - not so easy even in your own language - and finally floored him in the end, by stating
"Och, ah rreally have to stop noo - mah Rs is gettin' sore!"

As an aside from Navy Terminology, my father in law earned his living as a greyhound breeder, trainer, and punter, which made for a precarious lifestyle. One particular Christmas around 1949 my mother in law asked the daughter of another trainer what Father Christmas was going to bring. The little girl responded with a few items and then added 'if my daddy get's a turn' it's being a standing family phrase in the three generations since.

    Hi Judith.
Thank you for stopping me from racking my brain, I think Spanish root used to be better at cleaning the teeth than toothpaste, used iot all the time down the West coast.
    Cheers Des
