Some years ago as a young lad we had a neighbor who was a steward ion her, this was in the 50's and I recall listening to the stories he told us of his travels.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Fantastic mode, wonder who built it?
The yards model of the Mauretania was presented to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle and can be seen in the great hall where the Turbinia is exhibited.

According to the headlines this is the original model being sold by the builder Swan Hunter.

Hope that the Liverpool Maritime Museum is not been conned as I was in the Discovery Museum in Newcastle a few months back with my young nephew looking at Swan Hunters model of the Mauretania. Maybe they are selling it off to make space for new exhibits, which would be shame with it being part of the Tyne's ship building heritage.
The Discovery museum has its own web site where you can take a virtual tour around it and the model is on the first floor, top left on the floor plan of the museum.

Maybe it was on loan to the museum John.

#8, Good grief Brian at those prices I hope he's miming! When I heard him last in the closing of the 2012 Olympic Games a newspaper stated 'The musical climax of the evening was provided by Sir Paul McCartney' Talk about "The Emperor's New Clothes" he was positively cringeworthy. ..... They should have played the old Beatles songs of the 60's instead....Anyway Brian I'm with you on him spending some of his dosh whilst alive that should suit his ego,........ he does have one, that hair colour is atrocious

    Problem solved.
Apparently there was two identical models made of the Mauretania. The one up for auction is owned by Swan Hunters. The identical twin is in the Discovery Museum mounted on a plaque and encased in a mahogany and glass case, unlike the one up for Auction.
They both weigh something like half a ton so if successful, the Maritime Museum will most likely need you good self and your mates to knock up a sturdy display case LOL
Next time I'm at the discovery museum I will investigate and see if I can find out why two identical models were made at the same time and where the Discovery Museum one came from.

Sorry to hear that, heck of a price to pay though, wonder who got the model?
Hopefully it is not going abroad and it can be displayed to the public in a suitable setting, not in some millionaires fancy house.
