Re: Old Pictures Ships On The Mersey.
A ex CP Captain, who was a pal of mine, used to run that simulator they are using for the three Queens event. Think he may very recently retired. A third mate I sailed with in CP when I was Mate, is now one of the senior class 1 pilots and may also be involved in the event. The Liverpool pilots, at least up to 08, still used an "appointed" pilotage system. Fo instance, for the ACL ships that run in there, there was only two pilots who piloted them. After the debacle with the Humber pilots back around the late 1990's the Liverpool pilots were said to be the best paid of any U.K. pilots. For our trips up the MSC the pilotage fees from the Bar to any point up the MSC was in the region of £2000 in 08, of which £750 was for the Canal pilots. The next most expensive pilotage after that was strangely enough the South Wales Pilotage who used to charge almost as much to take us into Barry.
These charges related to 5500 ton chemical tankers. Somewhere in my papers I also have the charges for the Antwerp pilotage which were around half of those I have given.

Re: Old Pictures Ships On The Mersey.
Perhaps not directly connected with the current thread. The Three Queens event will fall on the 25th of May next year( or veinty cinqo de mayo to many) That is a Monday. The Mary will arrive on the Sunday, stay overnight at the Stage and be joined by her sister ships the following day. If there is a possibility of a Meet Up in Liverpool, perhaps it might be arranged around this time. I've been trawling the City's hotel availability around these dates and the rates seem reasonable, in fact I've booked a double room at 30 James St (Titanic White Star building) for £72 on the Monday. Just a thought to sustain us through a long hard winter. (apart from our Antipodian members who'll be bronzying on Bondi with their tinnies.

Gilly, 'Veinty cinquo de mayo' that reminds me, and no doubt many others, of a certain street in BA.

The first meet up at the Pen & Wig (BOA celebrations) when Lou was over was on that date but it was a Saturday but whether people can make it on a weekday we will have to see.

Re: Old Pictures Ships On The Mersey.
Thought this might be of interest.
Monday. 11th October. 1907.
Cannons boomed, sirens shrieked and thousands waved flags today as the new Queen of the Seas, the Lusitania, broke all records
for crossing the Atlantic and regained for England the supremacy of this key passenger route.
She took 4 days 19 hours 52 minutes to beat the Hamburg-American lines Deutschland, the previous holder of the Blue Riband,
by 11 hours 46 minutes - an average speed of just over 24 knots. Even more amazing is that the month old liner was not even
out for the record. Her captain had been instructed not even to bother to try for it in the face of high seas and head winds.
The giant Cunard ship left Liverpool with 400 first and 473 second class passengers aboard on Saturday night and passed the
Daunts Rock, Queenstown, the point from which Atlantic crossings are officially timed, at 10.25 am on Sunday. Her best day's
steaming was between noon on Tuesday and noon on Wednesday when she covered 617 miles, 16 more in a day than the
Deutschland has ever managed.
Today's success comes in only the second West-bound voyage of the new liner but her master, Captain J B Watt, believes she can
do better still using the full strength of her 70,000 horse power steam turbines. The Lusitania was described on her maiden voyage
last month as "positively the most brilliant thing in ships the world has ever seen"
Captain Watt praised her too. "She's a daisy." he said.
Saturday. 16th November. 1907'
Liverpool. The world's biggest liner, the Mauretania leaves on her maiden voyage, arrives New York on Friday 22nd.
