Britain is awash with litter on our Streets, it is a disgrace, Go to Singapore and the streets are spotless.
There is no respect at all today. An Irish gypsy family have moved into the top of my avenue, a rental house that was beautiful when it was owned by a friend a few years ago. They do not work, have a mini bus and a car, the house is wrecked, painted white graffiti on the outside walls and the Garbage wheely bins upside down trash all over the pavement and into and across the road. They are on benefits and sit in the front garden amongst all the filth and rubbish smoking fags at £8 a packet. I have reported it to the Council enviromental services and they do not want to know about it. All the neighbours are going mad about them, Their kids do not go to school they stand in
the "garden" throwing stones at passing cars and the other day were seen trying to break open the door of the Post Box on the corner,.
It is embarassing when friends call round, it looks like some slum estate when it was a lovely des res avenue that is why I have lived here for 51 years. I am going to have to leave, but now cannot get a price for my house.
Even the immigrants from Kabul and Karachi complain so they must be bad.

. Regarding global warming, 10,000 years ago Bolton was under 200 feet of ice, So what melted it????
Rain Forests, they thrive on carbon and pump out oxygen, they are the lungs of the world. So the Mad Greens who are obsessed with carbon fuels encourage logging and the rain forests being cut down to grow palm oil trees,
Yiou cannot grow a rain forest, takes thousands of years, so the very people who complain about it are the very people who are causing global warming with their daft ideas.
Global warming has been happening since the planet was created, Under the Antarctic Ice is coal and oil, so millions of years ago there were rain forests to produce that, So what froze the Antarctic? Climate is in constant change all the time over thousands and millions of years, we cannot stop it,
Volcanoes are pumping millions of tons of gases and dust into the atmosphere, every day there are over 200 active volcanoes, Are the Greens going to Plug those to stop them??
The population of people on earth has doubled in the last 40 years. we need wars to cut down on population growth,
but wars also cause polution, Every dead man killed in war is one less to breed.
So all we can do is keep Britain Tidy.
    Cheers
    Brian.

Ivan, I actually meant that there was no Authority about, Police, Council etc and I take your point about members of the public saying anything to the litter bugs. I have also visited other countries and seen how clean they are. Makes you ashamed to be British and ashamed of the disobedient attitude that people have today towards what should be a natural desire to be clean.

There were a lot of truth in some of the old sayings, one springs to mind " Spare the rod and spoil the child". Another " Do unto others as they would do to you", Our forefathers led a more respective lifestyle, the introduction of the dogooder and the journalism which follows such has been part of the downfall of normal living standards we were brought up with. See by todays news is being pushed out of all proportion by the media, about a book by someone written who was employed by the Royal Family, what has their private lives got to do with anything, apart from appealing to those who are jealous and would like to see pulled down. The three journalists jailed in Egypt for crimes against the State, every news from Al Jazeera says the three journalists states " The three innocent Journalists jailed have now been X numbers of days imprisoned", if in their statement when they declare innocent, on whose authority do they speak, their own.?? To my recollection they were found guilty by an Egyptian court which is a legislative body of that country. The other adage " When in Rome do as the Romans do" springs to mind. A lot of the ill will in the world today is amplified by extreme bad journalism in the world, in fact is the best propoganda machine in the world. Thank goodness for the Internet where ordinary people can air their views against the owners of some of these publications. The freedom of the press which they also quote, should be exactly the same as the man in the street. JS PS Maybe that is why there is so much litter in the streets, probably discarded newspapers telling people what they hope thay want to hear, JS

Interesting commenst Cappy. A survey done here in Oz a couple of years ago showed that the lower down the socieconomic scale a person is the more they rely on take away food.
Singapore airport and I saw a cleaner on his hands and knees with a little brush to pick up bits of waste you could hardly see. The dedication there to cleanliness is amazing. But as to Uk and rubbish in the streets, last year when in London I noticed not one rubbish bin in any of the main streets, little wonder there is rubbish abounding on them.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    HI John.
I remember we were leaving Swansea in the 50s on the Trevose and had slings of timber stacked on the decks ready to heave over the side. I went home for the last night and told my father he should get down to the Gower coast the next day where his mate had a seaside batch, as we went pass the area we were busy dropping the timber over the side, can't remember now whether he retrieved any, but there would have been enough to build another batch.
Every BTC tanker leaving Swansea in those days started washing tanks straight into the sea once Cilly? Isles was behind us.
When I was working on the old South Steyne in Sydney's Darling Harbour in 2000 my mate who owned it had been having trouble with the toilet shore discharge, I arrived one morning and you could smell the sewerage, the harbour was full of floaters, I dashed up and woke him up he nearly died on the spot, then I said I don't think that stuff is ours the pipes are all still OK. There were two Italian cruise liners berthed just outside Darling harbour and had let go their sullage tanks at night, don't know what sort of fine they got but I think it would have been very substantial.
    Cheers Des.

All the rubbish bins were removed because Police had found explosive devices in many of them, especially in the mainline stations, this was about 2004/6 and have not been replaced especially after the July 2007 bombings. One of the many penalties we pay for having open borders.

I don't think our streets have ever been as clean as they are now (apart from bleddy dog fouling).Litter wardens out and about now £80.00 on the spot fine for dropping as little as a cigarette stump. We used to hear Liverpool people saying they went into Liverpool city centre and felt ashamed at the state of the place with litter,we don't here that much now the younger generation are a bit cleaner than we were and there are litter bins everywhere.I don't suppose there is anyone on here that can't remember when we were young and we got fish and chips or pie and chips when we came out of the pub and ate them along the road, what did we do with the paper fold it up and take it home or take it back to the ship if we were around the land.No we dumped it on the road where we were as that was the acceptable thing todo people were blind to the state of the streets.I will say one thing our front steps were scrubbed and sandstoned every week and the pavement outside the house swilled down but general public places were always litter strewn with lots of broken glass thrown in.

I have to agree with all the posts regarding litter in the U.K. We must be the worst nation in the world for dropping litter. I am constantly having to pick up empty Pizza boxes and crisp packets from the street alongside our house and put them in our recycle bin. As to idiots who toss plastic into the sea, they should be locked in a room and shown constant videos of the damage it does to marine life with dolphins having those plastic ties wrapped over their noses making it unable for them to feed.
I always try to get anyone to pick up litter I see them dropping but you have to be very carefull how and to whom you point out to the error of there ways as at best you may get a mouthful of abuse, at worst a physical attack. This is not only from the younger generation but I have been abused by middle aged, well dressed men on southern commuter trains when I pointed out to them that putting their muddy shoes on train seats was not really the done thing. There reply to me, using foul foul language, was as they used that train every day it was up to them if they wanted to put there feet up on seats, muddy shoes or not. I actually find that a number of the younger generation quite open and apologetic when I ask them to pick up their litter, especially those either of a school age or having just left school some years previous, as the environment is a subject taught in most schools. Though having said that we are still a long way behind even our European neighbours when we come to keeping our streets litter free. In Shields the main shopping street is monitored by CCTV and you often hear over loud speakers "will the gentleman/lady who have just dropped their cigarette butt/greggs wrapper/macdonalds carton on the street, please pick it up and put in waste bins provided". You see some very startled looks on faces when they realise that big brother is watching them and this is one of the cases where I totally agree with big brother watching us.

Agree Jim. where i live they publish these convictions in the weekly free paper in a sort of 'name and shame' column. The fines for litter dropping are £100 minimum, victim surcharge (whatever that is) plus costs. These offenders are mainly caught by cct cameras rather than wardens on foot, and these cameras are able to find a needle in a haystack. However, the litter does continue, i was walking in the main pedestriainised area yesterday and observed fag ends, food wrappers etc still being discarded, even inches away from litter bins. I'll be scanning the weekly freesheet this evening for my regular portion of Shadenfreude.
