Pretroria Castle three days out from Cape Town and my face swollen up like a balloon. Ships doc tells me I need a tooth out, realy, will send you to see a dentist when we dock. Off I go to see this giant Kaffier built like a brick dunny. Looks in my mouth and gives me a prick, with a needle, go outside and wait he tells me. No sooner out than he calls me back. Out it comes with blood and goo all over the place, the needle ahd not taken effect, how could it aftyer such a short time. He then shoved a plug in the hole telling me if I have any more problems to go back and see him, like would I like to go and visit Godzilla? No charge to me so no idea who piad.
But I still have all my own teeth, total top plate and partial bottom, the rest are in a little box as I promised my mum many years ago that I would go with all my teeth.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

My father always had a spare top set kept in a bedroom drawer till one day his youngest grand daughter clipped clopped into the living room with my mothers high heels, a hand bag over her arm and dad's teeth half in her mouth.....
Never seen my sister move so fast whilst the rest of the grandchildren fell about laughing.

Three years ago I had one of my back teeth starboard side lower deck removed by my Dentist,
    Mr, Christian.
I was about to go to Tahiti, so I asked for my tooth, Why, he asked, so I told him, he put it in a nice presentation box.
I took it to Tahiti, and my friend there, Manuraii Young, a decendent of Mr Midshipman Edward Young of HMS Bounty, took me to Matavai Bay where the Bounty lay at anchor for Six Months waiting for the Bread Fruit season. On the Beach there is a large Rock with a crew list on it, all the names of everyone on the Bounty. icluding Mr Christian.
Next to the Rock is a Bread Fruit Tree, so I buried my tooth at the base of the tree, So from one Mr Christian in Bolton to Mr Christian in Tahiti, my tooth will forever be there.
I have visited my tooth twice since then and will visit it again next February.
I wrote the story and took the photos, and took them to my Dentist Mr Christian. he was amazed at what I had done.

To get the UK ENG1 medical the quack will also examine your teeth and if they are in a bad way he can tell you to go and get them fixed by the dentist before he issues you the "fit for sea, unlimited" ENG 1 medical cert. required by all seamen.
A trip to the dentist taking 10 Chinese crew members for treatment in Canning Town when I did a pre sea coastal taster trip in Blue Star on the California Star, ended up with me being threatened with a knife by the Chinese bosun as after nigh on a full days work by the dentist on all the crew the last one to go in, an assistant steward, needed that much work doing that I was told to bring him back the next day. I was in the Mates cabin explaining all this to him when the bosun burst in with a knife threatening me as he thought I had told the dentist not to bother with the last guy as it was too late in the day. Took a fair bit of calming down and explanation by the mate before the knife was put away. Blue Star were paying for all the treatments including extractions and fitting of false teeth.

I met someone else who still had all his own teeth. He kept them in a little OXO tin.

None of us paid for dental treatment whilst serving in the British Merchant Navy, nor did we pay for hospital treatment or repatriation. This was all paid for by the Company, which required all hands to have regular medicals by the Company Doctor usually at the Doctors Surgery. When I was with Bibbys, if you were on Company Contract you were covered by BUPA in the UK, which covered your immediate family as well, received a portfolio of Company shares, and offered a cheap mortgage for house purchase.
