When Blue Funnel ran a regular service to Shanghai all of the Chinese part of the crew had to line up every day to recite the thoughts of Chairman Mao from his little red book.
A bosun at the time was half Chinese but 100% scouse, he could not speak a word of Chinese and hated having to line up.
He changed his name from Wong to Morley.

Thought he could have changed it from wong to Wright. Then are you Wong, no I'm wright, or conversely are you Wright, no I'm Wong. That could have made the guards think. JS

Re. Those on the regular ships on the China Coast. Most British Flag vessels had the Union Flag painted on the Hull both sides of vessel. The union Jack is not an easy flag to paint due to some of the white bands being broader than others. Did they have these flags painted on side using a template, when the original was put on. Or were some just painted on a big board and hung over the side. Cheers John S.

Shanghai and other ports in China 58/62 era amazing places ? not the China I knew, no shore leave for anybody in any port unless you went on the 'Friendship Shop' bus with armed guards and only allowed on bus with 'Chinese Units' no foreign currency allowed ashore, you were searched at top of gangway and had to show your pass to armed guard at top and bottom of gangway. Foreign currency had to be changed into Chinese Units and what you spent in the store was recorded on a form which had to be handed to the shipboard Commissar before sailing. If you hadn't spent all your units you had to hand them back but didn't get any of your foreign currency back. Shore leave !! had to have an armed guard escort even taking the draught,,,,,,,,,were there two Chinas' in that era
