    there was an interesting piece on the telly yesterday on how the derrick/topping lift got its name anyone see it on countdown?/jp

    ivan it was the story{true by the way} of a condemned man I queen elizabeth 1st days he was pardoned by lord Essex if he became hangman anyway cutting a long story short the {the hangman} came up with the idea of the topping lift instead of a gallows he hung 100s including Essex? look the story up very interesting?jp his name was derrick by the way.

    HI Dave.
    Welcome to the site where you will find ex seamen and a few currant, with good tale and memories.
    I used to go to Monty's in the late 50s early 60s when i was with the NZ union steam, great pub, last there for a few parties late 90s with the Vindicatrix NSW branch.
