If you accuse Cappie of being her pimp also, he always says it was his bruvver. If he had got the Ch. Stewards job in Runcimans he would have had the feeding rate down to half a crown. JS

Re: captain phillips the film
A piece of pure escapism it was good, how much is the actual truth and how much poetic licence is only known by those actualy involved. But it does go to show just how dangerous some waters can be.

Re: captain phillips the film
#17 Never saw the film John, from what I've heard, perhaps unlikely I will unless it comes on TV. Quite agree that the advice given about dangerous waters was only advice and not compulsory, but that is one of the charges leveled against Capt Phillips is that he ignored advice that may have put his vessel out of harms way and instead considered the commercial advantages of taking his normal course. He was put in a quandry and unfortunately that is the lot of a Master, make the right decision no one ever notices, make the wrong one and the world is made aware. Unfortunately in this modern world more and more authority is being taken away from the Master and the older you are the more vunerable you become, as too many young bloods waiting to jump into your shoes because one step down the job above looks easy, it is only when they reach that step they find that everything is not as easy as it looks and that they have to kow-tow to instructions from an office that is run by 'bottom line accountants' and not by someone who understands their trade. I doubt Phillips sought the noteriety so that he could feature in a film, but underestimated the vunerability of his vessel and was also mostly concerned about keeping a timetable because he knew that falling behind could involve great losses for his company and he was there to protect their commercial interests, which has always been the Master's role along with the safety of ship and crew. Make the right decision, you're doing what you get paid for, make the wrong one, no matter how apparently justified, you're the villain and thus it has ever been and will forever remain so.

#####got paid a vittlin allowance for a week in59 it was 1 shilling and 3 pence a day......the other 1 and3 pence was shared between the old man and the chief steward........i did pimp mary to the old man ......for 5 bob and the chief steward for 5 bob.......remember mary saying niether of them could do much ......the steward saying all the time it was to much to pay .....and the old man asking for a deviation that even shocked mary.....who rob will tell you is unshockable......at least rob said he could get a mechanical leg made for mary in the engine room.....but sadly at her demise 40 years later it hadnt arrived.......i think it was sold for scrap metal in north shields by a runcimans apprentice......who went abroad to live ......ps the 1 and 3 pence was true.......................so was the rest........ regards cappy from shields south side of course

Re: captain phillips the film
Cappy how did you always manage to get paid above the going rate. Did you have Mary to hold as a threat against those who wouldnt pay up? Is this how you made your first million. Apart from the deviation bit, think the old man may have gone the whole way and asked for the variation bit as well. The Ch. Stwd. must have been the one I sailed with who had a bad stutter and owned a fleet of houses in South Shiely. Never saw a poor Ch. Stwd. apart from one, and he lived in North Shields, last saw him in the 70"s and all he had for a lifetime at sea was a parrot, the parrot had a stutter as well so have strong suspicions who paid him off , to get the job. Re: captain phillips the film
He certainly knows a lot about the less attractive public houses along the Tyne estuary , on both North and South banks . I expect on Runciman's pay and conditions he needed a second job

#28... Probably his feet John, ask him next time on whether he wears socks inside his seaboots. Dont think he does, even though he says he likes sheep, has no affiliations with their wool. Cheers JS
