#13 Cappy not sure which ship it was maybe have been the Fernmoor, but there again have recollections of her going down in the Pacific, don't either think it was the Kirriemoor as had a mate on her and he wasn't away 5 years to my knowledge. There again he disappeared on the China coast after finishing his time so maybe it was and he got to like it. When I saw him in 1963 he was yellow skinned (jaundiced) and his excuse was he had to drink a lot of Gin and Tonic for the Malaria. Cheers John Sabourn

I went Coal Burning Firemanwhen I was 17 on the old BEECHFIELD, 4 on 4 off do your own trimming and dump your own ashes. Bleddy hard graft. then on a T2 Tanker TECTUS, All the Firemen skinned out in Curacao when we got orders for the far east, Guaranteed a two year trip, so they disapeared.
We had twelve on deck so three of us went Firemen. a nice cushy job. change the tips once a watch, a bit of cleaning and oil can . T2s were a good job down below.
But we were home in six weeks saw the Firemen down at the Pool they were like skeletons, in gaol in Curacao you had to buy your own food, so they starved,until the Consul found them and sent them home.
There was a Firemans Training school in Liverpool in the early 50s , they had to shovel pebbles through a tire hanging off the deck head and then go round and shovel it back.
There is a knack in feeding the furnace, Throw on a pitch a little twist of the wrist and a jerk and the coal is spread evenly across the fires. Rake and slice to break up the clinkers . It is an art form .

#13 Life Sentence. Cappy I was Lucky had about 10 days off in 4 years. The first 6 months on Avonmoor... Arrived back in Purfleet Thames with Sugar from Queensland. The old man let me go home, and got one night at home and rejoined the ship in Cardiff loading coal for South America. Was there the next 2 years Had a week off as was transferred to the Glenmoor with Hoggy as master for the next year and a half. I was lucky had 10 days off in 4 years. They don't know the"re born now. Your Apprentice going berserk have seen similar, I was threatened of having indentures cancelled a couple of times. Once in Japan where the 3 mate was trying it on in a bar ashore only clouted him once he brought the problem back to the ship the wa...r, it wasn't his girl anyway. don't think they could do anything like that today ......it was a different world.......somehow those things were accepted......we learnt the work ethic .....fathers back from the war .....seen harder times and families lost ......not many luxuries ......food....heat to a minimum didn't have a top coat in winter .....living in a prefab ......going to sea at least belly fiiled.....and a chance to bring money home ....first trip galley boy 9 months on tramp brought home 12 white fivers ....put it on the table me dad walked out ........he hadn't seen 60 quid before and my mam with tears in her face......but at least we had the chance to work......am I happier now I don't know .....grandkids are my pride and joy regards cappy ps any sign of rita yet ....big rusty thing sighted in the bight ....but could be one of runcimans

Did she give you the wax treatment. John Sabourn PS For those very few people I should imagine who are not aware of the wax treatment. Usually takes place in Japanese bath houses where a female masseur or a male if that way inclined, rubs soft cream on her hands and starts doing things that a good girl would never dream of. When you least expect it she takes the palm of her hand and raps sharply and painfully on the end of it, and the wax jumps out of your ears. JS.
