A quick google search of his name however would reveal to the members of this board that while he portrays himself as an honourable ex member of the Merchant Navy that he is in fact a vile internet troll who spends his days posting disturbing and disgusting remarks to total strangers(women and children included) under the guise of various account names on open forum boards in Britain because he can do so anonymously and also, according to him, "it's fun!". But then again, like I've said, it's all on google and there for anyone to see what type of individual counts himself among your honoured ranks!

Well Chris, you know me.I should really have as my signature:- 'Gulliver-.Never unknowingly upsetting anybody'.......
or alternatively: 'Why use a spade, when you can use a shovel'...
But I know our Mr.John Gill is not an unkind shipmate!
When you think about it,it's only the kind of good-natured repartee and banter most of us had at sea.I say most because occasionally, just occasionally, one sailed with a po-faced totally humourless so-and-so. It would be tolerable if they had any redeeming qualities like being hard-working,or of having impeccable punctuality or hygiene, but usually those qualities were also sadly lacking. It was often hard work living with them for six or eight months at a time, especially on long deep sea voyages.
I also salute those men(and women)aboard here who although not ex-seafarers themselves join in with the general camraderie and ethos of the sea without questioning the nature of the merchant seaman himself, but rightly(and wisely!) just accept it..What I find hard to stomach though are those certain few amongst them who take exception to some of our members' merchant seamen's forthright views and turn a post into an eventual feud of sorts-I think one person comes to mind here.
With regard to so-called 'trolls'or 'sockpuppets' I will say that as seamen ,when we were aboard our ships we were very protective of our temporary floating 'home' and instinctively knew whether an intruder or outsider was aboard , whether at sea or in port.
On our site here,I would say that the majority of us can soon tell whether a member is genuine or not.I know I can,and have sometimes been criticized in the past for 'outing' such intruders.Usually it's kinder just to drop subtle hints to them that they are known to be 'sockpuppets, although that won't deter the prolific 'sockpuppet' ,one for example on SN who was known to have had as many as 15 aliases(I have a list of them) on SN,and then came here !
I can spot one very quickly, amongst most of the MN sites, and can often verify an identity with a bit of diligent and persistent. research,.Rocket science doesn't come into it.
The way I see it,as long as a bogus posting member doesn't criticise me or any other member seafarer, then no harm is done, and let them get on with their own little fantasy identity (ies)and game they are playing.
I'm well aware that some of you will be saying 'What is he on about?.(Do I hear a faint fade-out of the X-Files intro here?.)
but I will also assume there are those amongst you who will know exactly what I am talking about and won't mind me saying so.....
