The aviation industry is in a similar state after many scandels of fraudulent licences, they are blacklist in the EU and are restricted to a few flights to the USA (limited to certain approved aircraft). Rick.
    .
. in 1995 I flew to Australia and back with Philipine Airlines.
The Service on board with their hostesses was the best I have had of all the airlines in Cattle Class.
    .
The planes were crap, OLD 747s, they told me they were bought cheap off other airlines when they were twenty years old.
Outward bound on a 747 we landed NEAR Manila Airport. We had circled Manila Bay several times while we dumped the fuel, we had no landing gear, it would not come out , jammed. We glided in and crash landed in a paddy field with 18 ambulances and fire engines speeding towards us. Then the plane tilted over until the wing hit the mud. Bit shook up but no injuries.
They got us off and took us to a hotel for a couple of days.
Home ward bound we flew from Manila to Bangkok, as we were coming in to land there was a big bang and the wheels collapsed, the plane, 747, spun around and was proceeding down the runway backwards in a shower of sparks and flames, the Pilot had his microphone on screaming ,"I cannot control my plane" over and over.
Again the fire engines and ambulances were out to us. again no injuries.
At the same time in Honolulu two Philipine Air line planes collided on the run way and were write offs.
They were then banned from British air space.
On the way home from Bankok we had a load of drunk German men on board, They were disgusting, shouting and screaming at the loveley hostesses and abusing them two were pi55ing in the aisle and others in their seats.
I got up and thumped two of them, they just went down on the deck and stayed there.
then I shouted at the other germans, that they had failed twice before and they could try for a third time with me.
as I pointed to each one in turn. They were worse than a load of Pigs.
They shut up and stayed quiet for the trip to Frankfurt. The Hostesses came over to me and thanked me for shutting them up.

Quite exciting but I can do without all that at my age.
    Cheers
    Brian.

How very sad. Closer to Britain there were the Greek recycled ships such as the 'Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt' which became the Greek 'Lakonia' ( TSMS Lakonia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ). Out East there are frequent tragedies and one doesn't have to be Einstein to work out that the two major factors are A. Greed and B. Hunger. Corruption is a curse that feeds on this.

Tony, Annie will probably know some of the folk who worked or were passengers on the ferry and I feel sad for all those families who lost their loved ones and not least lost a critical welfare contribution.

    Regards, Richard

Default cebu roll on roll off ferry sinks

i came here by 2 Cathay Pacific Boings, a 747 and 767, great service, the best i have experienced, an enquiry is being held over why she sank in calm weather, but all say it was calm, a Coastguard statement, a passenger stated a rope was loose holding a bus, if it was calm how would that affect the ship ?, i thought chains were used on Ferries, ?, the Captain and Coastguard stated it was calm, it was stated by the Captain it happened very quickly, the Company owns ten Ships, nine now, !all are old, have been close to some, no way would i travel on one. i do not know the past history of this one, ? saw one leaving cebu recently, looked like a coal burner, the amount of smoke she made. she is registered in cebu but runs from further north.

    Default Beware of casping aspersions

Please don't jump to conclusions too soon at the quality of the Filipino captain etc. on the ferry.
Any member live near Warren Pont or Heysham?
Try getting hold of the MAIB report on the "Riverdance" a ro-ro that ended up on its side on the beach off Blackpool.
No one on that bothered to calculate stability , no one knew the exact weights of the trucks, no one stowed them properly or lashed them correctly despite sailing knowing that the faced force 9-20 increasing 11 outside.
Catalogue of disasters in line with the Herald of Free Enterprise but at least in this case no one killed.

in many cases its not the Captain or Crew at fault, but the tools they have to do the job.

Like Brian I once flew with Philipines air line, not long after that they went belly up, not sure if they fly now.

As to ferry accidents, there have been far too mnay over the years, most around the south pacific region. Having seen some of the ships thye use around some of the islands including Fiji I am surprized there are not more.

have been lots of scandals regarding Ferries here, big enquiries, then all goes quiet, and Fisherman, they keep on running, look OK from a distance, nicely painted, closer inspection reveals a lot more, i find it hard to believe they cannot find the wreck, coastguard must have sonar, ? coastguard are in deep trouble here for shooting dead a Taiwanese Fiisherman, Taiwan really angry, refused any more Philippine workers going there, Coastguard claimed the Fishing Boat rammed there ship, on inspection, no damage on fishing boat, apart from 50 bullet holes, big climbdown now from the Goverment here,
