What I wonder was the eraly sailing days equivalent of a logging?
Fourty lashes with the cat of nine tails, walking the plank, keel hauling?
Now nothing, no wonder society is the way it is now, no respect.

Happy daze John in Oz.

loggings.
One of Captain Blighs trips returns to the UK.Its Channel night and they have just all signed for their overtime, one seaman is not happy he has been done out of 10 hours ovies. He goes upto Cpt Blighs cabin and confronts the captain and puts his complaint forward.Bligh yells at him we have been away a couple of years and you come here and accuse me of fiddling you out of 10 hours overtime,go away man.The man stood his ground and said listen captain I kept a meticulous record of the overtime I worked and you have definitely fiddled me out of 10 hours if I dont get it I'l see the union when we dock.Bligh is furious, how dare you accuse me of that I am a true and honest man now get below before I lose my temper. The man wont move and continues to argue, the capt calls the mate,Mr Mate get a lynch party together lash this man to the for'mast and give him 10 lashes then bring him back to me.The lashing over the man is returned to the captain,is your overtime correct the man is asked,no you still owe me the 10 hours.Bligh tells the mate take him back and give him 20 lashes, back to the captain the man still argues he is owed the 10 hours. He was backwards and forwards a few more times and he still argued that he was right.eventuall the poor devil was nearly dead when he was brought before Bligh again.
Do you still say you are owed 10 hours overtime Bligh asked the man,no sir my overtime is correct and I'm happy with it and I'm sorry for accusing you of fiddling me out of it.I'm glad you've seen sense said Bligh and anymore nonesense like that in future AND YOU WILL BE SACKED OUT OF THE COMPANY.
Regards.

Capt. Kong,
That is a surreal story about DI I Balmer but him enjoying the favours of the party's lady friend was too much, what a excretion! Guess for the time not too unusual but makes you think about how many were stitched up during those days? What a small world bumping...in to that fellow who said "I done it guv" to you what on earth possessed him, you would think it would be something you would bury never ever to be raised again no matter to who? Though they say a guilty person always at sometime confesses to to someone even years later if only to get it off their conscience?
I have ordered the book through Amazon, thanks for the tip.
Les post 19 for so many DR's, VNC's she must have either been a bad ship or many of the crew were not prepared to put up with that dreadful MANZ run? Two year was it not? I was of the understanding you were told that is what you were signing on in in UK? Though also heard of ships hoisting the MANZ flag when on Aussie or Kiwi coast?
I heard of a couple who when signing off there was nothing in the conduct DR section not quite sue what was made of that? Richard

Hi Richard,
Enjoy the Book, a very interesting story.
I have my own chapter and I am in the credits at the front.
The photos of George Kellys Funeral at the Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool are also mine.
It is a good example of Police Corruption.
My friend, Charles Connolly, went to visit his daughter who was a Nursing sister at Liverpool Royal Hospital, [ she also worked with my son who was a Doctor there, ]
When Charles went onto the ward, in the first bed was Balmer, who was quite ill. He said Balmer turned whiter than he already was when he saw Charles,, who he had sent down for ten years.
He just said , "Your Ok Balmer, I wont bother you."
Cheers
Brian

Charles Connolly
Hi Brian, about Charles Connolly,I remember in the 1970s he worked in the Allison's Club in Litherland Liverpool,he would collect all the empty beer glasses,I remember one bloke being nasty towards him, told him shut his mouth, and Charlie thanked me,I think Charles was good bloke, any time I seen him in there he would always let on.Radio Merseyside done a phone in about the Kelly and Connolly case the Barmaid from the Beehive at the time phoned in and many others.Roger Phillips fronted the phone in,lasted two hours.I Taped it.Ken.R634898.
