Now this is stretching the old memory bank somewhat, but when we went AWOL, and it happened usually for me in Hamburg, we would turn too in the morning, knock off for lunch, and a quick beer in the nearby pub, and lo and behold would last the rest of the day. So it would be quicker to educate pork, i worked half the day and lost the whole days wages!!. But we were fined a days wages as well? i think. So if that is correct, what happened to the fines? did they go into the company coffers? Regards KT

    Default Loggings/Fines

At least Bob you have done your bit for Charity. All fines were supposed to go to Charity. It would be interesting to know what charity it was and hopefully not back in the shipowners pocket, I cant remember if there was some means where you could have found this out at the time. Your loss of a days pay of course went back to the shipowner. Cheers John Sabourn

Was the money supposed to go the King George Fund and paid to the widows and orphans of seamen.

Default Did only some Captains logg you?

Hi shipmates, I remember someone saying at sea, the more he was logged the less he payed in tax? This is The first time I ever knew the money was given to charity? I for the record was never logged.

Not only was you logged a day plus fined a day but the next logging was doubled up on some ships. Hence when I got logged five weeks and fined five weeks it was cheaper to jump ship than pay of. Do not think I could have lasted without another logging the way it was going on that particular ship.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

    Hi All.
Got flogged, logged and fined in Durban. Held the ship up untill the skippers wife got sent home, interfearing in the ships running, reporting any holidays to the Chief mate, causing all kinds of trouble.
Caught ashore by the South African police three bells knocked out of us, two in hospital. Then we were logged, then fined to pay for the delay, but we got rid of her.
    Cheers Des
