It was reported that on 1st September 2012 Somali pirates executed a syrian sailor on m.v. "Orna" because the owners (U.A.E. based) have not paid any ransom money. The "Orna" was seized in December 2010 and owners have been deliberately stalling the payments. The pirates say they will execute more crew members if payments are not forthcoming. Apparently this is reported as the first execution by pirates, other deaths being attributed to collateral damage whilst seizing ships and natural causes whilst in captivity, although I would imagine those "natural" causes would have been accelerated by the position the unfortunate souls found themselves in. It is about time the International community got together and wiped these pirates out, never mind just sinking their boats and dumping their guns overboard and then releasing them because of the lack of so called evidence, Which fishermen go fishing with AK47's and Rocket propelled grenades, enough is enough

Most of these people you will find are cowards deepdown, treat them the same way as they treat the hostages and the problem would be solved. Give no quarter to them and to hell with convention, they do not recognise any so why should we?

I did read somewhere that if a pirate was arrested by the Royal Navy he could ask for Asylum and they would have to bring him to Britain and give him money, a house, a TV AND A CAR and then his family can come and join him.
Has anyone else heard that?

Brian in theory he could ask for political asylum if he came up with the right excuse{he was forced into piracy} and he could refuse to depart in any other country except britain the biggest threat to beating the pirates is the mobile phone if you were to sink or kill the pirates how long before some dope would put it on the likes of youtube? we must remember there are hundreds held against there will out there we would all like to waste the bastards but its the safety of the captured first get them out and lay waste to the place.jp

There boats and crews should be destroyed on sight, *dead pirates can not ask for asalym, U K wont do anything unless a UK Ship is captured, *if there Bases were blockaded *they could not leave or return, *West Africa is increasing in *Piracy acts, *it will spread unless drastic measures are taken, *they just laugh at the puny efforts to stop them, seems un believeable that a couple of *small open boats can capture a huge ship, *if all ships going that route *had to carry armed guards it would soon stop. with pirate ships destroyed on sight, but nobody seems to want to take drastic action,*

The U.K. and IMO have recentley pushed through legislation that allows for armed security guards on board and it is now a growth industry. The problem arises when you come to signing off them after you have finished transiting piracy areas as they are not permament crew members. Quite a few countries take a dim view of a bunch of heavily armed men turning up at there borders after guarding a ship through, say the Somalia pirate area, and wanting to get on a plane back to their homeland. A large number of ex. Russian and Baltic states army personnel are taking up positions with the agencies providing these armed guards and there are a number of U.K. companies advertising armed security guards and anti-piracy advise for shipowners.

Well yes, that could happen, but it would be a shame if he was tragically lost overboard on the way to the UK wouldn't it. !!!!!!
