SS Arendal
Just seen this on another forum. Hoping some of the great and the good on here can help the guy out.
In tonight's"Echo" there was a letter from a guy in Southampton, asking for any pic's of S.S.Arendal,on which his granfather,Charles Vermulen(from Birkenhead) was the captain. In 1917,on it's way to Marseilles, the ship was attacked by a U-boat, but the torpedoes missed, and the sub' surfaced, and began using it's gun! The captain returned fire, even though the cargo was petroleum, but eventually, the crew had to abandon ship, and were taken prisoner!
He was later awarded the D.S.C.(usually, only awarded to service personnel) for his actions!
He's after any pic's of the ship, and also, any information about the ships owners, who were based in Preesons Row(which was near to the Victoria monument)and who's name was Roberts,Brining(Brinning?) & Co Ltd. Their full names were, Edward George Roberts, and Christopher Mathew Brining.
I just thought that some of the expertise on here, might produce a result,as the guy concerned,Mike Beed, hasn't had any luck,so far!
