From what I can gather the massive change in Singapore began at the time the new airport was built there. I remember that in 78 when I was there last the plans for the airport were just being finalised. Bugis street was still in full flow at that time. However when my ex parents in law flew stopped over there on route to Perth about 8 years later they said then that it had all changed. Just shows what a determined right minded government can achieve.

    Default Singapore

Lived in Singapore in 61 - 64 as a child. My Dad was in the RAF at Changi. We had the time of our lives but it was a very different place to what it is today. The Singapore River was as black as the "ace of spades" with all the Junks and Sampans in there and it smelt to high heaven.

Got to go back to Singapore ten years later whilst on HMS Lowestoft. It hadn't changed that much by then but it was a nostalgic visit.

Got no real regrets except when I rejoined the Canberra Star in 1969 in Hull for a 9 month trip to Oz but I chickened out and went home! Been to many places but not Australia because of this. Don't you just want to go back and give yourself a good shaking!

    Hi All.
I suppose not going for my ticket was a regret later, and not learning languages, a mate had one of those things you learnt from when you where asleep, he learnt seven languages and Later got a job at the UN. But realy those were minor things compared to the marvelous places I saw and expierences I had.Reliving them all on this site thanks to Brian.
    Cheers Des

    Default Regrets

Regrets............cannot think of any, but then again like many on the site I am wearing rose tinted glasses and also have an aging memory, but having said that I can clearly remember things from 70 years ago, but cannot remember what I was doing at this time last week

There were times when waist deep in water with heavy spray coming over trying to lash down a shifting cargo,
Then I wished I had joined the Air Force.
But overall I loved every bit of it.

    Cool FAR EAST PORTS

You should have signed on one of the Troopers.
I did six trips on the Empire Orwell,a very happy ship,
and we called at Singapore,Hong Kong,Pusan and Kure.
spent about a week in Kure, then back home calling
at the same ports,so I visited Hong Kong and Singapore
twelve times.Great times, wish I could do it all over again.

I was in Singapore in March for a few days, you would not beieve what it is like now, an incredible city.
The Marina Bay Hotel 250 metres high with an infinity swim pool on the roof, and me on top over 750 feet high with a floating football pitch below, . Raffles still going strong, the Gin sling is now 26 dollars, and a lovely young barmaid I could fall in love with in Hooters on Clarke Quay.
