    Default Colour on the Thames

    Hi All.
I have just been watching the video Brian has put on site called colour on the Thames, great video took me back not quite to 1935 but things hadn't changed much in 1950. I have eight Sun tug pictures on my wall. But one ship took my eye it was a twin funnel Star boat, I have never seen a twin funnel star boat before anyone kow the name of it?

Thumbs up Colour on the Thames Video...

A poignant video, taken in that productive interwar lull, when the possibility of another war seemed remote. The ocean going vessels featured in it would be lost within a few years during the Second World War.

    The DARTFORD of Watts,Watts Co.
The UPWEY GRANGE of Houlder Bros.
The BLUE STAR LINE vessel. (Note the Olympics logo on the title page!)

Not sure if it is the ANDALUCIA STAR though it could quite well be.-because there were 5 of the ‘Luxury Liners, built in the late 20’s,and these were all modified in various ways in the mid 1930’s , about the time of the video, making identification of individual vessels of the class difficult, except for the Class AI Shipspotter which I am not!

    For example
AVELONA STAR in 1931 was converted just as a cargo vessel with her upper decks and second funnel removed. (The latter was fitted to the
Celtic Star in 1934 and modified).
Refitted , with a cargo capacity of 651,699 ft3 (18,454 m3) she had the largest capacity of any vessel afloat.

ARANDORA STAR .1936 -Mainmast removed and accommodation extended to poop ,which increased her passenger capacity, hence making her eminently suitable for her later role as a troopship.Sadly she suffered great loss of life(805 souls)when she was torpedoed 2/7/40 by U-47.

ANDALUCIA STAR Lengthened 1935 by Cammell Laird & Company Ltd. together with the fitting of a Maierform bow.

    ALMEDA STAR ditto
AVILA STAR ditto but by Palmers,Jarrow

But whichever of the five liners she was, they would all be lost during the Second World War.

Note also a brief view ,behind a crane,of the 1921 built HOBSONS BAY-an Australian Government pass/cargo vessel. That neatly dates the video as 1935,because the next year in 36 she was renamed ESPERANCE BAY,Happily, she was not lost in WWII,and survived until 1955.

    Hi Tony

You could try the following to get a shot from the movie. Watch the movie and when it gets to the relevant part press pause. Then press "PrintScreen" on your keyboard which captures everything on your screen at that time. Open MSPaint and press "Paste" You now have a copy of your screen from before with the movie picture captured. Outline the area of the photo and then click "crop". This now just leaves the photo which you can save as a JPG or whatever you want in the normal way. Hope this gets what you want.

    Hi All.
Thanks to everyone who replied. it is a great video I will be watching it over and over.
Thanks tony for the tip, I never even knew about the print screen button!!!! I always did it on the screen itself, I have never used those three buttons on the top right hand, as for the numbers buttons they are thick with dust, I will have to do a cleanup now ha ha.
