MSC Flaminia Sets Sail for Romanian Repair Yard

The burned out MSC Flaminia has left the Jade-Weser Port in Wilhelmshaven, Germany and is sailing under its own power to a repair yard in Romania where it will be overhauled, the ship’s operator has said.
A statement by Germany’s Reederei NSB said that the MSC Flaminia left Wilhelmshaven on Friday at about 5 p.m. local time after receiving permission from Romanian authorities. The ship will take about 10 days to reach Daewoo-Mangalia Heavy Industries’ repair yard in Mangalia, Romania, where it will undergo repairs to fix damage sustained in a series of explosions on board the vessel this summer. The statement added that classification papers are present and the stability and security of the vessel has been confirmed by Germanischer Lloyd.
Daewoo-Mangalia Heavy Industries is a subsidiary of the Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea, where the MSC Flaminia was built in 2001.
The repairs include exchanging out the damaged center sections of the vessel. The overhaul is expected to be completed by the end of September 2013.
As gCaptain reported previously, the 6,750 teu MSC Flaminia suffered a series of explosions in one of its cargo holds in July 2012 while underway from Charleston, South Carolina, to Antwerp, killing 2 and forcing the remaining crew to abandon ship about 1,000 miles from land in the Atlantic Ocean. After extensive firefighting efforts, the stricken containership was eventually towed to Europe and arrived at Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in September. A third crewmember later died from his wounds while at a hospital in Portugal.
