    Default Thameshaven

A recent quiz question asked us to name a port on the Thames with the answer being Thameshaven.
It flumoxed a lot of folks as there were no oil tanks showing in the picture.
All the tanks at Thameshaven were removed a number of years ago and the place is now in the process of being converted into a deep water container terminal.

When I was on the Partington, a Shellmex-BP coastal tanker, it was always the Thames where we loaded, sometimes Thameshaven, sometimes Shellhaven and sometimes Isle of Grain, which of course is really the Medway

Canvey Island was the gas terminal for the Methane Princess/Progress.

Which of those ports had the "Cat and Cracker" as the local watering hole? I fancy it was shell haven. Albi

Albi,I never served on tankers, let alone knew the area, but about 12 years ago I visited the Isle of Grain and the 'Cat and Cracker ' in Grain for a few jars ,when my younger brother was working for the M.O.D. at Upnor. HERE.
    Also found this snippet somewhere:-

Pub signs can move with the times, too. The sign for the Cat and Cracker on the Isle of Grain in Kent was a domestic cat, back arched and snarling at the small explosion of a Christmas cracker. But it was cleverly named for the catalytic cracker (or "cat cracker") process at the then-brand new oil refinery. It may be the only good thing to come out of building a monster refinery on those placid and beautiful marshes.

    Cheers!

PS. Further research on the Pub shows it was apparently demolished to make way for new housing fairly recently, leaving just one other pub,the 'Hogarth' to serve the community.
