Holland 1
For those interested in old submarines. The original and I think the oldest one ever in commission was the Holland 1 followed by the Holland 2 ( I think ) The Holland 1 is in a museum in Gosport, unless it has been moved elsewhere. In the early 80"s I think 81, I was working on a ship attached to the M.O.D. and came under the jurisdiction of the Royal Navy. We were on passage from the Faslane area to Portsmouth and when just north of the Eddystone were running an old fishfinder, and got a target on the bottom, some of the divers were put down at a later date and it was discovered it was the Holland 1. She had been on passage from Liverpool to I think either Portsmouth or Plymouth after just being built, and had I think 4 or 5 of a crew, this was in 1913 she was lost in bad weather as I said just north of the Eddystone. I believe it was just good luck we found her on the fishfinder as were not looking for her I believe. There was no loss of life as crew were taken off. A few years ago was in the UK and in Portsmouth so went to see her, they were going to charge me for going into the museum but when I said I was on the ship that found her, I got in free. I reconized my handwriting in the deck log books, and this small submarine had been done up very well. There were of course other things to see apart from the Holland. Cheers John Sabourn.
