    Thanks to all who answered, I now have a better understanding of the compass and how it is affected by outside influences.

    Perhaps 'Vetting Bodies' deserves a thread of its own. Whilst I think vetting has its place I was horrified to learn that one of the 'premier' tanker companies employs 'vetting personnel' with no tanker experience. Mates off container ships and such. Competent in ticking the correct box but when you deviate from whats on the check list the lack of experience plain to see.
