Newtothis
Hello,
Having read all the pervious replies it would appear to me it is far more difficult nowadays to join than when I first applied in 1956.
I wish you all the best and hope you join, it is a fabulous career whichever department you join.
Cheers

Newtothis
Hello Newtothis,
As you started this thread i am suprized you are not replying to others comments.
I wished you the best of luck in my previous reply and I stand by that , but Gullivers comments are true.
The moment you step off the gangway and onto the deck of your first ship you will enter a completely new world and new language where everyone has a name and a job to do, you will only learn this by doing it yourself and you will find that 17 years of age means just that 17. I am now 71.
Best of luck.

Sorry I've not been replying, just trying to get as many tips as possible! When you say it's difficult to get into, what kind of qualifications do you think I would be needing to get in? After this year I hope to have 6 highers all at A or B.
Please can you give us your real name~ As Gulliver requested!
Thanks!

Sorry to be a pain but I just have one more question, when I was young I used to get very homesick, is this something you can get over after a few days at sea?

You will be too busy working, seeing new things, learning new things and learning to fit in with the established Seafarers to have the least feeling of home sickness.
You should read my account of my first voyage to sea as a Deck Boy, not quite finished yet but will be on here soon. Hanging over the sea on the outboard side of the rails, counting to ten , then I was to let go and end it all, after being battered every day by a mad bullying crew. Death held no fear for me , only a release from the misery. I got to nine then started again. I got wise to myself and then battered almost to death one of the leading hard case bullies, I never looked back after that. Times have changed in the last 60 years so things like that will not happen. dont worry about it. the game is soft compared with yesteryear. You will enjoy the life.
Cheers
Brian.
