There was a pub not too far from Millers Bridge, Pier Head direction from A1 at Lloyds called The Farmers. Anyone remember it?

hi lads. i nevet rode on the overhead as i only docked in larpool once, when i came home DBS.. but i do remeber it very well from delivering furniture . i have never heard it described as a railway before, always the overhead. was that where scaffold (the group) sang about the aintree iron? alf

I understand the 'Aintree Iron' is some obscure reference to Albania. Give it time someone on this site will come up with the definitive answer.

Your not a million miles away in your assumption Bill THE AINTREE IRON, Was in reality a codeword used by the Albanian Government to notify and wake up those referred to as sleeper agents. And was the term used collectively for a group of pigs. Along Aintree railway sidings in Liverpool there was a pig farm known locally as the Aintree iron. Hope this solves the myth Regards all Terry.

according to the song it because of the noise made by the trains going over all the different points as it was a major junction i believe on one of thier albums there was a picture of all the different lines crossing. alf

smiffy65 the aintree iron is said to be the famous Aintree racecourse outside of liverpool,viewed from the air it is shaped like a flat iron, hence the name "aintree iron"

Stevee I think that if there is a definative, it is in Mike McGears head
and not really debatable. He says so in the link above.

However, and I may be wrong, I thought he gave an interview in the late 80's early 90's when he said that Tommy Smith the Liverpool footballer was the "Aintree Iron"
given he was a renowned very hard man at a time, when the league was packed with hard men.

trailertam I too remember the interview where Mike McGears stated that Tommy Smith of Liverpool FC was the Aintree Iron, and, incidently, Tommy Smith has recently released a biography entitled " Anfield Iron"

With reference to the Farmers. My memory has it that is was located on the corner of Blackstone Street and the Dock Road. There was a terrace of houses behind the pub called Townsend Terrace.

The Long Bar was the Bramley Moor along by the A1 at LLoyds.I think this Long Lobby that they are talking about is the Sandhills at the bottom of Sandhills.As far as I can see this is the nearest pub to the Cunard berth,across the road was the Boathouse and the Atlantic.Where the Liverpool meetups are held now the Iron Horse or whatever they call it is the two pubs,the Boat house abd the Atlantic now knocked into one.The Sandhills is now a demolished derelict site covered in weeds.My first job ashore was barman in the Sandhills,there was no Long Lobby just a big bar and a parlour at the dock road end.Obviously the pub had been modernised when I dont know.The funny part about this is that I walked in having been sent by the brewery,I handed in my introduction from the brewery, the guy I gave it to nearly fell through the floor when he seen my name.The manager who had been there quite a number of years had been carried out of there in a coffin the previous week his name Jim Brady his name was still over the door and his widow living upstairs.What's the chances of that happening!!!!
