Does anyone remember George Robee,in Port Said ,and i think it was Indian Joe at the other end,they didnt half sell some crap but it all looked great as a boy,I remember i swapped most of my clothes for a load of Trinkets,photograph albums,penants and a photo of the ship,i should have been warned what to expect.PHIL

Cant recall the names,but yes i to bought a few odds and sods in Port Said,not to mention a really good Flick Knife,and guess what,got caught with it at Cape Town ,so that was the end of that haha! Dont know what i would have done with it anyway!
Also bought an Envelope sealed with supposed to be Pics of al the nice places around,well on opening it ! Wow!! I had never seen such stuff in my life!! LOL! How green was i then!
But there were also some good little trinkets as well,i recall very vividly a Bangle i bouught for my Young Sister,it was Silver (real Silver mind you) and got it for a song!
Happy memories !! All those Ports ,so much to remember!

hi philip these guys who trade at both suez and portsaid have different names all the time we use to know them as the glliygilly men ihave wallet that i got years ago it had the egypt pyramids engraved on it you had to watch them they would thieve any thing they could lay their hands on one use to come aboard if we let him and shows tricks with a snake and other tricks lou

Remember them alright, you could buy gold trinkets thaty neede a tin of Brasso to keep them looking good. Port Said Bibles and the like, but it was not all bad. I still have a photograph album and a very good real leather writing folder that I still use.

I can remember those arabs pulling 20 or so empty cans making a hell of a racket through the crew accommadation and trying to sell port siad bibles.
Also in the town along side the canal they had a shop called WOLWORTHS.

Remember buying a flick knife from one of them.
Mainly because he held it [open] to my kneck and asked'do you want to buy a knife'
Also bought a 'leather' bag which I gave to my now wife.
Turned rotten and stunk the place out.
Still as John says. Got a few good things that are still with us and family members.
Who was the guy who when he saw you could talke in any dialect? ie scouse etc.

I remember buying a bottle of Spanish Fly off,bloody
stuff didnt work,I bet it was cold tea.

I sailed through Suez in 2005, The bum boat man joined in Suez he only had a few bits of Chinese crap, souvenirs of Egypt made in China.
I asked him about George Roby and the other fella Jock Macgregor, he had never heard of him. didnt know what I was talking about.
