So sad that they could save one of our icons, but could not save one of their own, funny old world innit! so very sad.

Sad really to see an old lady being treated the way she was , but what else could they do. No one wanted her perhaps it would have been better if she had gone to the breakers many years ago. Picture 2 with the anchor!!!! The line from the movie "think we are going to need a bigger boat "springs to mind

It is truly sad to see the United States going to a watery grave in this way, but....it was even sadder to see it rotting away in Philadelphia. I will never understand why this great US ship was not taken up as a museum ship many years ago. It was an icon of US shipbuilding.

sadly - yes she could have become something bigger in the maritime world - just as the qm - qe2 and the rotterdam - but the mere fact that she DID not bears testament to what i have always maintained - other than her record crossing - 3.5 days - there is nothing else to merit anything about her no " americon icon " no legacy " - nothing and all the hype of late surrounding her will quietly be displaced to maritime history - legacy of a long suffering rusting hull of a ship - no i say - let her go with an ounce of dignity still

Well some Americans will still see her when she is a reef, better than watching her get driven ashore at Alange.

    Thanks for those pics Bryan,

There will be countless American seamen who sailed on her who will miss her, and have an afinity with her that a shore person would not understand. The very fact that she held the Blue Riband, along with her name, should have been enough for America to try and keep her as part of their heritage.

There in lies a problem for all of us Ivan.

We all have memories of favorite ships and adventures that shore folk will never understand.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
