Dunkyle
Hi All
Only had the good fortune to sail on one of Denholms that was the Dunkyle in 1969, bit fed up with the run to Seven Islands, but the officers and crew made up for that a great bunch.
Cheers AJ

Engineering Officers

Some of the stories that the stewards used to tell us deck crew about the way they acted was quite funny and I realise that they still have to keep there mouths shut as they could be talking about some of them that are on this forum. Needless to say there where more good ones than those previously mentioned. Les
[/QUOTE I did a few months on the Naess Trader Back in 1958/59. Mind you, I was but a mere ordinary seaboot, so that self serve bar stuff didn't apply to us. It was a good ship though, with a good crew, from el capitano on down to the ship's cat; with one exception. The chief engineer. He was 'fae Glasgie', and the most ignorant S.O.B. I've ever had the misfortune to sail with. He had an inborn hate of deckies, and took it out on anyone of that ilk! I put it down to him being that one bad apple in the barrel. He used his 'officer' status to say and do things that he certainly would not get away with today. I guess he was the exception to the rule when Scowegian referred to Denholms as being less class ridden than other companies. I would like to meet him today, but I guess by this time he will be shovelling coal for Old Nick.[/QUOTE]
See ya guys,

As a new member of this group I came across these comments......Typical Bolshy Deckies I was and still am an Engineering Officer - I know the word OFFICER really gets to you...But unlike your selves - I trained as an ENGINEER then went to Sea - I Studied hard for the position .......

To put our engineer friend in the picture in fact the only officer on a ship is the Radio Officer he may have studied to get his qualifications and good luck for doing that but everyone on a ship is there for 1 thing only to do a JOB
but thankfully i very rarely came across that sort of predjudice in 17 years at sea.

a school mate and fellow apprentice joined the mn as an engineer when his time was out.
When he was accepted by the federation, he was told that from that point on he should consider himself an officer and a gentleman and should conduct himself as such.
Possibly that is where our engineer friend got such a high opinion of himself.
By the way, my friend, in common with lots of other mn engineers from my home town, glasgow, had a good laugh at being described as a gentleman.
His idea of a drink was a bottle of buckfast or lanliq wine and a good meal was a pie and chips eaten from the paper bag, both consumed on the street corner

Officers
Right on mate,
It has always been about jobs, I agree that Officers spent time to be educated in their chosen proffession,
but stewards and deck hands also served an apprentiship over years.
In all of my years with Denholms, (post 1977) their was a lot of respect given between all camps and
that made for happier trips.
