Tripping Out
During the 1960"s, Mexico had a reputation, especially among American students, as a place to get high on hallucinogenic mushrooms and commune with the Universe. Few knew that this reputation was started by a New York banker named R. Gordon Watson, who along with his wife and a photographer, visited the Indian village of Huautla de Jimenez in the Oaxaca highlands in 1955. There Watson ingested some of the hallucinogenic mushrooms the Indians called los ninos santos, which they used to treat physical and emotional illnesses. Watson and his wife were the first foreigners to take los ninos santos , and they returned to New York with some. Spores from the mushroom, identified by Watson an amateur mycologist, as Psilocybin Mexicana, were taken to Paris by a scientist friend of Watsons where they were artificially cultivated. Shortly thereafter, a Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman created a synthetic hallucinogen, calling it psilocybin, which in turn, became popular as LSD in the United States. But many students preferred the natural high of the mushrooms, and continued to travel to Mexico. Despite the repressive regime of President Diaz Ordaz.
So you see all our woes are started by the yanks and then perpetuated by some of these mongrels on the continent, and we want to join them ????? JS

Oh dear Doc. Just as well you reside on the other side of the world.JP might bump into you in Boots during the 8-12 smackhead queue for their methadone.

Re: Tripping Out
I think a close scrutiny of the most well known British shipping companies will show that they started their development either running guns, slaves or opium to the outposts of the British Empire !! I am open to correction but I do not think so !! Regards Peter in NZ.

Re: Tripping Out
#2 John I started off smoking Turf Cigarettes and then advanced to Pasha about 1949. I wonder by todays standards how far up the drug list they would go, they burned like tarry rope and smelt bad at times, were on ration and under the counter and sold singly at a halfpenny each. Today cigarette smokers have gone the full circle as cigarettes are locked up with no advertising on packages. Who said History doesn't repeat itself. Cheers JS PS only high I ever needed was a pair of stepladders when putting a new light bulb in, used to let the wife clean the windows upstairs, now live in what you call a bungalow and just put the hose pipe on. Ivan and Brian I assume you are talking today about your blood pressure. Can see by Vernons post who among us led an ill spent youth. His house will probably be raided tomorrow by the drug enforcement lot. You"d better let them in vern or they"ll just damage the door otherwise. JS

Re: Tripping Out
lads I think every chemist shop in the country is the same? the government said a few years ago if they got in they would give drug addicts and drunks 3 months to get off the gear or no benefits. that has not happened . there are to many of our young hooked on something give them jobs make them work it did not do any of us harm working for a living. jp
