Hain Steamship Co
Hi Fellow Mariners
I served on MV Trelawny as junior apprentice from November 1960 to February 1961 Capt was Lloyd and First Mate P Sadler other apprentices were G Quick (St Ives lad) and T Raddings from Grimsby, then Trevelyan from Feb 61 to Dec 61 Captain Boyd and First Mate Marchant fellow appretices were R Wingate who then sailed as 3rd Mate and then P Triggs who jumped in Australia.
I often wonder what happened to them and why I gave up on the sea.

Hains was a great British Company to whom we can thank for the ' Deviation' concept. What ship am I thinking about?

I worked for Hain- Nourse from 65 to 70. Dont remember the name of the ship, but it was always brought up to us apprentices to illustrare the need for keeping up the compass book.If I remember rightly the gyro had failed, and no one had been keeping up on the error on the standard compass, and the ship ended up half way up the Irish coast, instead of the Western approaches. Is this what you were refering to?

Evening John,
Forget the compass for a moment.
First clue.....'Deviation' as in Marine Insurance.

With a wee bit of help from Google, did you mean the Tregenna, and Hain v. Tate & Lyle case?
Very interesting reading of the court case.
Cheers

That's it John. It was indeed an interesting case and throws a new light on doing a 'foreigner'

As I do not subscribe, is there any way to purchase just this one edition or would any kind person be able to either send this Hain related page or scan / copy to attach as an e.mail for private use, would suggest posting here - but this may be subject to copywrite?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards, Keith.
