    John S.
There were two types of home shelter, the Anderson shelter that was half buried in the Garden, and the Morrison shelter that was erected in the biggest room in the house consisting of an 8 by 4 inch and a half sheet of steel with angle iron legs and an angle iron right around the top and bottom to stop them spreading, we used it as a dinner table, and of course to hide under when the Germans bombed our Village.

The Anderson shelter was nearly always too late to get into as the ack ack guns in the street used to start almost same time as the siren and the shrapnel dropping back to earth was too dangerous. One of those in house shelters would have been ok , it was under the stairs was supposed to be the strong part of a house or in the cellar most times. The ceiling one time came down once but that was a V2 3 doors down from us. The survival course when going to sea and doing the life raft simulation at the local swimming pool by jumping off the top board and somehow getting into a 20 man raft with a top on used to remind me of similar with the other 19s sweaty feet. #30 When you look at it like that Fred you only have to go back a couple of generations to see the huge broods that some of our forefathers and foremothers were responsible for, puts a whole new meaning to family .e.g. the wife and me were responsible for a boy and a girl and going backwards on my fathers side only , he was responsible for myself my sister and brother , his mother and father were responsible for 5 boys and 2 girls , and I’ve lost count already and that’s only 2 generations and only the paternal side . Going further back would produce more , and going forward today would produce more . To make sense of the massive amounts of descendants and future descendants Adam and Eve have a lot to answer for. So was a logical conclusion at the time to explain how human life form started ??? Mind there must have been a lot of cross breeding went on, and today with all the sexual deviations the future generations are going to have some explaining to do. Cheers JS one 1% er to another.

Not being a gin drinker I couldn’t differentiate between Gordons or Gilbys . Which one was the old wife’s tale for women wanting to abort Gordons or Gilbys and a hot bath ? JS

i believe i may have been able to tell the difference as i did appreciate a aperitif or two in times past, But i think gordans had the edge on gilbys ie juniper berries ie the taste and tang where instantly recognisable, Or was that just a old wives tale.

Gordons export strength was good, but their standard shoreside stuff was poor in comparison, Beefeater was always better regardless of strength,
