Saw something nasty

During our time at sea on board and in port we all saw some either very odd or disturbing events.
Something we would rather not see or even want to talk about later.

My biggest scare was in cape Town, in a taxi coming back from the Mountain.
The light turned Red so the taxi stopped, the car on the outside kept going, slowed the other side of the junction.
An arm came out of the window, a shot was fired and a body went down, the car drove on.

The taxi driver told me to get out, go around the corner, you saw nothing he told me.

Found a bar around the corner, went in and had a very large brandy.
Needed two when I saw the size of the dog, a bloody Rhodesian Ridgeback, looked like a small Donkey.

It was during the time of the ANC so nothing was out of bounds to them.
Vernon may well know of similar incidents over time.

Seen many of such John, and the Rule of the road there is do not stop at a Red light, just slow down, take care and then carry on through. Stopping at any Light or Stop sign is a No No , and always keep all Doors Locked!

I can remember seeing pictures of cars with flame throwers underneath. If an attack occurred in the street, the driver pressed a button, and huge flames shot out the sides.

I n Algiers in the late 50s, big rucks every night, and not safe to go ashore. Leaning on the rails one morning, and saw what i first thought was a dummy in the water, realised it was a body, an Arab with his throat slit. We called a passing small boat with a very young lad and presume his dad at the helm, and pointed to the body. The father took the boat alongside the body, and the small nipper after protesting, grabbed it by the jacket, and towed in to a set of steps right by the stern of our ship. An ambulance and police were called, the body was placed at the top of the steps, and lay there in the strong sunlight for the best part of the day, and did it whiff, right by our accommodation. eventually it was collected in a van.

In some little jungle village in Borneo, we were anchored just off the riverside. We found a body, in uniform, floating face down by the anchor chain. A boat was called to take him ashore. Meantime, one of the ABs dropped a couple of hatch wedges on him and they bounced away with a real loud "Boing", he, the AB, thought it was great fun.
When the little boat came over, they towed him back ashore. they pulled him onto a ramp and turned him over, it was awful, he even bounced then. Out of every hole in his body, came loads of crawly things imaginable, ears, eyes, nose, mouth, there was no flesh on his hands, just bones. He was swollen like he was bursting out of his uniform. Horrible sight it was.
They told us he'd been missing a week, but the anchor must have freed him to surface. They said he was a local Dayak policeman.

Hi Johnny.
Surprised he hadn't been eaten, didn't the Dayak's used to eat people? I know that the Maoris used to call them Long Pig, I once asked a big Maori mate of mine if he had ever eaten long pig, he said no, but his parents used to let him dip his bread in the gravy ,LoL

On a slightly easier note it comes to mind of a voyage along Suez canal.
We had on board the usual locals for lights and all the others bits required to get us through.
We had to feed them we were told so the cook decided to make a bit pot of stew for them.
Easy way to feed them allene though it was not Hal Al meat the guy in charge said that would be OK.
The pot was made and put out for them to take as they needed.
The chief steward had the hots for the cook, never knew why as he was no Carry Grant.
But the chief was a vindictive person, he put a ham shank into the pot and called the guy in charge.
Showed him the shank and all hell let loose.
The cook having heard what was going on got a bit of a shock, ran forward and spent the rest of the time in the chain locker.
He was certain had the locals got him it would have been very bad.
A few of the locals went to the side and threw up, not happy at all.
Once there were off the cook came out, fine for him but no food for the rest of the crew, just cold meat and bread.
