Charles de Gaulle went somewhere keeping his destination secret and came back. This not even near to fleeing the battlefield. There is probably no law under the Republic that could justify a trial for this.

De Gaulle left France to seek the support of the Frenche army in Germany. It was not like a desserter living his duty but a president preparing for civil war.

Had he not been well received by the citizens of France, why would they then name a very prominent international airport after him?

He was doing a similar job as William Joyce was doing for the nazi. The only difference was that Britain won their war for them and William Joyce got hanged . He would have received the same sentence if the roles had been reversed. That is if he didn’t manage to escape those seeking him , maybe he took the Scarlet Pimpernell as his role model.

#92. Because he told them to ? Churchill and his flamboyant funeral cortège was all arranged by himself before his own death. All politicians and so called world leaders want to leave something of themselves for history to remember them by .Too many are remembered for the wrong reasons however. It is the biggest bonus they can get most think. JS

There was only one reason that De Gaulle got to be President of France, was to stop a Communist Govt, many of the resistance were communists.

What was it Winston said, 'of all the crosses I have had to bare, the worst was the cross of Loraine.' which of course referred to De Gaulle

Referring to the symbol of the Free French, General Spears, envoy to France, remarked, in a comment often attributed to Churchill, “the heaviest cross I have to bear is the Cross of Lorraine.”

The Cross of Lorraine. The Second World War was fought by the Free French under the sign of the Cross of Lorraine, the emblem chosen by the Resistance to distinguish their flag from the tricolour which had been kept by the Vichy Government.
