Steptoe and Son may well fit today as I believe both were in real life Gay, as was Benny from the hill.

But there is a danger here in Oz now, the opposition attorney general states he does not believe in the use of free speech as using such can often offend.
Well stiff mate, I will say as I think, and you can go whistle Dixie if you do not like it.

As stated we are our own worst enemy allowing the low life do good brigade to tell us what we can and cannot do, who gives them the right.

I say allow all the comedy, watching is not compulsory.

look at the so called comedians of today do they rely make you laugh i personally dont think they know what being funny is i could watch them all night and not even smile to make someone smile /laugh is an art and none of these are artists i have seen many funny men live but to me comedy is now dead no good writers for tv and none on the tv? jp

one of the original "folk" comedians was Bobby Thompson, or the Little Waster as he was known as in the N. East.
He died in 88 and was in his hey day years long before Billy Connolly, he never used used any swear words in his act but never " made it" out of the North East, probably due to his accent, not Geordie, but Pitmatic as it was called locally. He was huge in the workingmens clubs from the 50's onwards, take a look at the link below.

My wife knew Bobby Thompson and as you say outside of Stockton and Middlesbro no one would have understood him, another one was the Northern Eddie Flanagan (apparently)

As already mentioned an awful lot of so called stand up comedians/comics rely on what seems to be shock humour with bad language and inappropriate topics which might seem funny to some but in bad taste to most. Does anybody remember The City Arms in West ferry road by the Millwall docks in London ? When that was my home port in the late 60's working for B & C. We used to go there regularly for a few beers and to watch the comedy acts in the evenings. I can remember good comics and some drag acts that relied on there repertoire of jokes and innuendo to create a great atmosphere and some were hilarious. The clientele being a mixture of local dock workers and their wives, seamen etc. None of them were shrinking violets when it came to bad language but did not need profanity to be amused. Bad language here in central London seems to becoming the norm among teenagers and their elders as I hear it on a daily basis from both males and females and unfortunately nobody appears to care.

#66. Tony , Bobby Thomson I believe out of costume was a quite authentic and well spoken man. As others have told me. The likes of Harold Wilson outside of politics when he lost his Yorkshire accent and went back to his normal university speech was another, both were clowns in their own right. And both were well paid, I preferred Bobby Thompson’s comedy however. JS

Do not know the pub but the brewers name I do.

We have a guy here, bit of a so called 'climate expert' Tim Flannery' flannel would be a better word.

According to one source he has been declared the clown of the year for his outrageous claims regarding the climate.

She was excellent in all those Carry On films of the 60's and 70's.
