A little known fact about cheese is that the Norwegians claim to have invented the cheese slicer, not the wire but the hand instrument used in slicing there brown coloured cheese made from reindeer milk, quite nice cheese it is too. Always had to order Jarlsberg cheese for the Norwegians we had on board plus those delicious sild in mustard sauce they love but as Wallace would say you cannot beat a slice on Wensleydale on a water biscuit for a snack, eh Gromit.

Wasn’t there some advert for cheese with a bloke sitting at a table and saying to this damsel, Cheese, Please, Louise. What sort of cheese was that ?. Would have gone down well with that other advert where some female was going into organisms at a table in a resteraunt and the waiter asking another female on another table what she wanted , and her saying I’ll have what she having. J.S. How sad are we digging up Cheese Council funded t.v adverts.

    Cheese council advert UK television.

    I said, “Please, Louise,
Won’t you pass me the cheese?
Won’t you pass me the cheese?
’Cos I’ve got the bread and butter,
But I don’t have the cheese.”

    I said, “Golly, Sam,
Won’t you pass me the ham?
Won’t you pass me the ham?
’Cos I’ve got the bread and butter and cheese,
But I don’t have the ham.”

    Cheese, please, Louise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNYVEITT88I

I cannot remember any cheese on any ship I sailed on in the 50s and 60s. lucky to get fed.
All we got was our Pound and pint, weighed out by the Steward with his thumb on the scales. as per Merchant Shipping Act of 1894
I was as thin as a racing snake in those days.

Brian, That really does not surprise me I had to give it a lot of thought when it popped up, Maybe one of the catering lads can explain why ? Maybe it never had a long life to store in a cold room, And Dutch Edam which is the only one I ever remember being left out for the watch I think matures with age.
